That looks great.  Wish I knew how to fiberglass lot of fun projects could come from that.   You must have a very understanding wife (closet batman fan maybe?) Looking forward to see where this project goes keep up the good work.

Hey Steveo, actually my wifey in not into any of my building stuff. We have been happily married for 24 years and she has been really understanding with my project. We had an argument a few years ago and I told her I need to piddle around in my garage just like she likes to volunteer. To me it's just like breathing. My real job is designing swimming pools and I've been doing that for over 30 years. Kinda got good at that. It was about 8 years ago that I did my first fiberglass project. The 89. What Ilearned is I may not be that good at first but I care more about my project than someone I might hire. Start out small and each experience whether good or bad will be a learning experience. Believe me I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed I just really care about doing the best I can.You can too....Dave aka BWD

Spent the whole day moving the Big Kahuna and Tribute Rumbler up to the Sacramento Convention center. The Rumbler had a fuel leak I had to fix . We also have a new truck and trailer to deal with. The new truck is awesome and tows with no effort it has a turbo diesel engine. So looks like we will be thanking veterans for their service all weekend. Yes that means no work on the Big Mahalo.

Love it Dave

Ive done a fair bit of research the past few months in to components on the movie batpods and looking at the variation between tdk and tdkr if you need any info later i'm happy to help out.

look forward to seeing it progress.

Yeah Mr32 I could definitely use some help. I am currently struggling with what exactly the type and donor was the spindle setup for the front of the Batpod.dave

Already thinking about improving the steering. It seems that the rotating of the shoulder to turn is not as efficient as using a push pull with the bicep.
Not crazy about the structural integrity of the front fork being compromised with a hole for the steering lever. The angle of the steering arm seems weird going from high to low rather than horizontal like under the front fork.
Also the single shock at the top of the bike helps for downward compression but would a lower dampened help when the suspension goes up? Also a shock dampened on the front wheel?
These are the kind of things I'm wondering about. Possible mono shock on the rear? Ways to tighten the chain between the primary sprocket and the jack shaft. Then the chain between the jack shaft and the rear sprocket?ok I got to go to bed my head is spinning goodnight and thanks for looking dave

Man I knew things were more expensive out in CA but thats over double from what Ive found. WHat about buying online? Thats where I was looking at tires and wheels. I wanna say the Hoosiers were about $245 each and steel wheels were about $120....

I was talking to Kevin about his rolling chasis because I had the same question you just brought up about how you tighten the chain as it stretches. He said there is a little bit of room but not much. That also got us into a discussion about the rims and their offset and needeing to know that before ordering a set. What are your thoughts on that?

Fortunately I found out he lives not too far from me and I may...just may get a chance to see it up close and personal.

Hey FLMike, well I tried summit but they don't do business with those particular tires. Hoosier doesn't sell direct . I'm looking for the tires with the harder compound. Bad thing is I had a set before and gave them to a CLTC buddy that had helped me out. $645 for the pair includes shipping balancing and mounting with a warranty. Original wheels I got a quote from summit had a different lug pattern. Back spacing on the front is different from the rear that usually doesn't affect cost. I do like everything new from a local supplier. We are gonna order them tomorrow. Biggest cost on these builds are labor and since I work for free cost usually balance out.lol
Been working on fiberglass today for a few hours but hope to kick butt tomorrow. My challenge is to have the PVC and fiberglass to mesh to create a strong backbone. I can work faster in fiberglass than I can in metal so this is the best route for me. Once I get it done I will be able to build it in metal with greater accuracy. I just want the new and improve to be badass. Thats alway my goal. Hopefully I can move through the mock up fairly quickly cause the metal build will be a bear. Thanks for looking....Dave aka BWD

Oh that $645 included rims and all!? I didnt realize that, that's not too bad then. If you dont mind after placing your order of you could pass along the specs of what rims you got and the offsets, that would help me alot!

Originally i didnt think the offset would be a factor since as you are building the chasis, you'd just adjust each "leg" of the mount where the wheel attatches. Like from the down tube over to the wheel, you could just make it shorter or longer as needed so the tires line up on the centers. I'm figuring it would only be an inch or so in either direction and that wouldnt affect the over all look or function of the bike???? Key word being "figured it wouldnt" ...lol

Finally ordered the Batpod tires $580 for the pair. Also got the Wheels ordered and they were $276 for the pair. Total cost for tires and wheels is $856....Tires should be here in two weeks and wheels next friday. If you need specs you will have to contact me directly as I don't have permission to post them in public. I can say that it is as easy as you say cut the axle but there's a problem there. Depending on the make of spindle you use that will determine the wheel backspacing. To get optimum turning efficency you want the exact turning point in the middle of the tire. So say for instance you have a C spindle that has the exact turning point 4 inches behind the spindles mounting plate. and your using a 15 inch wide tire. You would divide the 15 inches by 2 equaling 7.5" then subtract the four inch turning point, leaving a 3.5 inch difference which would be the backspacing you need. By having the tire turn exactly in the middle you prevent sweeping of the wheel which creates friction as well as more room need for the wheel to turn. Backspacing is the distance between the outside of the wheel to the mounting plate of the wheel. This is way more critical for a motorcycle but very important in well handling cars. The Rumbler has this exact and I am still using the original 1970 cadillac power steering unit with no problem. These wheels and tires are only for mock-up and will never be used on a working version. from this mock-up I will be able to get very accurate measurements to have for my working bike. There are major areas of improvement over the original I hope to correct on the final bike.

Making the bike in fiberglass, PVC and epoxy causes me to really focus on critical stress points to the chassis and gives me a chance to correct it in fiberglass which I will then convert to metal. It appears I have a 20 day time period to get as much as I can get done for an upcoming show. So i'm trying to put every available moment I can on the mock-up. It will no way be done but having the mock-up at the show with the Big Kahuna will give a perspective of how big the BK really is. thanks for hanging in there with that explaination hope that helps...dave
