Can still get into the nose cone. easier from the passenger side, though. At some point I would like to run a parallel steering setup with the same pistol-grip/aviator steering you see here. Visability really isn't too bad from the nose cone. In some ways a little better.

What I've been doing lately is mostly interior, and heat shielding the firewall, finishing up the tail pipes past the mufflers, and had the dually adapters lathed for precission. Got dragster lug nuts on the back wheels. The 5 spoke bead locks will be the next project.

Looking GREAT

Much thanks, part of the problem is fitting that stuff into the reality of space and shape inside the passenger area. If you watch TDK, where he tells the copycat batmen "I don't wear hockey pads", you'll see there is no steering at all. It looks like he has just enough space to get in, sit down and that's it. Real tight. Way back, I was worried I was gona have much more space other than just to get in it.

Youngbat,

I'm building a "flyby wire" steering system for my mini-tumbler using a PC gaming joystick (full metal versions are available). I'm using the large servos I'm building to steer the tires directly, but there is no reason why they couldn't turn a steering wheel instead. That would let you put a joystick anywhere you could run wiring. It could also allow other advanced features.

I've got a video of an operational mock-up, but its not on-line yet. It should be available in a day or two on my build thread.

the only problem I see in using a servo for turning a full-size tire with all the weight and enormous pressure is getting a servo with enough power to turn the wheels, and then can I get it to fit in somewhere without having to add something on the exterior, or having it take up too much room on the inside. That's what I faced with just a manual rack and pinion.

If it wern't for the fact that I live 10 min. from Sweet Mnfg., I might be delayed in getting this thing as far as I have with the steering. They specialize in race car rack and pinions, and U-joints etc. I use a rack that you can't see from the inside, nor from the outside. Early on I was really afraid that a rack might end up eating half the space on the inside. But, taking this all in baby steps as I have, I rule nothing out. I'd first see if whatever servo-type situation is possible, then see if I can fit into the confines of the space available. Parallel is something I sort of have down in my head. All I'd need is something that I can attach where the U-joint attaches to the rack and pinion, and using a combination of steering rod and ujoints, I could put a second steering wheel anywhere I want. But... then I'd also need a second set of brakes, and accelorator. Which, believe it or not, I sort of have figured out in my head. I've separated the master brake fluid cylinders for each brake. i.e. if one brake fails, it fails, and does not affect any of the others. So what I might end up with is a motorcycle type situation. Right hand throttle/brake, or something.  crazy...

I've also been thinking about adding another quickener to the column. So instead of a 2:1 steering ratio, I'd get like a 3.5:1 ratio. We'll see what happens and what it needs. Basically you end up doing what needs to be done from a mechanical standpoint. Bottom line is that you want it to handle well, be safe, and respond well. Since this car is by no means a stock thing, you just have to test it in baby steps.

The motor torque is pretty good. I'd bet that if you can turn that joystick with one hand, the motor could turn it.

Space: the motor is a little smaller than two fists. So you'd only need that and a couple of small pulleys. You could use chain, but a belt drive would make it easy to "swing" the motor out of the way (and remove the belt tension) when you weren't using the remote drive. Connect anywhere along the steering column.

Worst case you could gear the motor down a little more, giving more torque, but taking longer to turn the wheels lock-to-lock; (like changing the steering ratio) you're not planing on driving from nose down the highway... are you?!?

If you see the motor test video it turns my wheel lock to lock in about .1 seconds. You could easily slow that down by a factor of 10 and have fast response.

BTW, I'm totally amazed that you'd even try to set steering from the nose. I tried to imagine that a few weeks ago and decided nobody'd be crazy enough to try that!

I'm in awe

Hay Bob, a friend just called me and told me about this site. It got me thinking if you set up some lighting and took a few pictures of your tumbler in the garage and sent them to these guys they might be interested in buying some high quality pics from you to add to their products.

http://www.style-your-garage.com/    they sell big pictures that people can put on there garage doors. That way they can have a tumbler parked in their garage to ... well at least look like it. Or any batmobile would work ... hint, hint, anyone with an 89

Bob, just saw on youtube that you have removed all of your Tumbler-related videos. I hope to hear that everything is ok.

some of those were pretty cheezy. this week will replace them with vids of the car really moving, not just in the driveway.

also on the 22nd of this month the discovery channel will be here all day shooting film.
