Got the frame stretched yesterday. It turned out really well and yes Ill be adding pics asap.   Next I have to figure out how to move the motor back and make brackets for the motor and trans mounts. If anyone has suggestions Im all ears.

Go out and grab a universal small block chevy engine cradle and transmission mount.. then you can just weld them in place.

I moved the engine back the same distance as the stretch (2 feet). We also dropped the engine down. That way the car isn't as nose heavy and your existing driveshaft will still work.

Wow! Your passion for the 89 really made me want to get out in this cold and work on my car.
Fantastic story.

I just showed my friend who is helping me with the welding a few pics of universal motor mounts. He says he can build them so Ill let him try first. haha. Tim, How did you decide on the height of the engine? I know it will be lower than where it normally sits and I know that as you move it back, the hood line lowers twards the canopy. Oh, Im also using fuel injection which helps with the height.

Need some pics of the stretch, I wanna see if I did mine correctly.. i bought the engine crossmember like Brce suggests but made the transmission mount from scratch.. just more practice...

when I moved and dropped the engine, if i recall correctly I went as low as I could to the ground, but not as low as to where the rims would bottom out if I lost a tire, scrub line...also this is where I think I will run into problems is the pinion angles, as you lower the back end the pinion changes angle. i may make some modifications in the spring to the transmission angle for a little more peace of mind,

The driveshaft and pinion /unversal joint are really the only thing that has made me really worry so far.

here's a video demonstration that got me worried. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmV4qwLfOMY

good luck later

and hurry and post pics

We fully collapsed the suspension so that everything was on its bump stops. Then looked to make sure the oil/transmission pan still had some bottom out clearance.

It is a straight shot from the transmission to the rear axle.. they made sure that there weren't any major changes there. Plus, the axle already deals with this in normal suspension travel. As long as it isn't exaggerated you should be fine.

OK. I believe I understand what y'all are saying. But with that being said, if you were to lay on the ground and look level under the car, will you see the oil pan or any of the trans sticking out from beneath the body? I'm just trying to visualize it.

Do you have your tires and rims yet?

wasn't sure kinda out of the loop a wee bit

I think the only thing you need to worry about is if your hood clears the engine , you can probably set it any height you want lower is probably better, dont forget show height and ride height will be different, when you drive oil pan will be another 3 or 4 inches off the ground.

Also from what I've read you shouldn't have anything below the lowest point on the rims, if you had some horrible catastrophic failure no power and a flat tire the height of you rims should protect the oilpan and floorpan from coming in contact with the ground...for your safety as well I think also a cop car should be able to push you off the road. tougher to do if your ass is scraping on the ground...

I could be wrong .... it's been known to happen....

later and where are those fricken pictures

I'm about to order my tires in the next few days. Rims ,I'm still saving up for....ugh. I'm trying to find a set of seats also but need to figure a basic height from floor pan to very top of seat so that I do not get a set that's too tall.
