gdnf2et (8/9/2010) I wonder if they are using the 1/18 ertl for reference ?I would say so. I'm very sure Anthony is using the 1:18 die-cast as a reference. He is doing a fantastic job recreating THE CAR, but it is not screen accurate. It looks incredible, tho....definetly the best replica built yet. -Matt

Wow, I just read through this whole thread and I'm very impressed. I recently watched The Car and went nuts over that car, much like I'm sure you did. I was looking for more info on The Car and I kept hitting dead ends and couldn't find more than a few pictures. Then I found your build on Autolog, then I found this thread. Wow.
Needless to say I joined this forum just to be a part of this thread. I'm (possibly) just as crazy about this car as you are, lol. I would love to build my own replica someday but I'm only 17 so I would not be able to do it myself or pay somebody to do it, not to mention it seems George is going to start using the design and probably cracking down on replicas. Someday though, after I'm out of college, I'd like to talk to George about building one.
For now, hopefully your build will quench my thirst so to speak, lol. I have a question though, didn't you buy the white donor car for your project? Did George just kind of commandeer your project and say he'll give you a fiberglass mold? Does that mean you'll have to buy another car to put the fiberglass body over? I'm just a little confused on those details.
I can't wait to see what's next!

I can't wait to see what's next! That's exactly what happened! Long story short, I have been gathering pics and other info for literally years, hoping to build a clone of The Car. I started a MySpace page devoted to the subject, which caught the eye of Tony Wood, who works closely with George Barris. Tony pushed me to make it a reality, and found me a rust-free California Lincoln which I had shipped to my house in NY. After talks with many metal-fabricators, it became appearant that this build was far beyond my skill and finances. Thru the '66 Batmobile Board, I met a guy who knew a Long Island car collector/builder named Anthony Taffuri. Anthony was building a MonkeeMobile at the time, and needed help with the headlight assembly. I pointed him in the direction of Tony Wood, who in turn introduced Anthony to Keith Dean(Dick Deans' son). Keith helped Anthony with the lights on the MM, and somewhere along the way Tony, Anthony, and George got talking about this nutty guy in Upstate NY trying to build THE CAR. I guess George was jazzed by the idea of THE CAR being built, this brings us to now...Anthony bought the Lincoln from me, took the reigns of the build, and told me I could build a one-off replica by making molds of the steel-body replica. So, yes I will be buying another Mark III in the future. I will be seeing Tony, George, and Anthony this weekend at The Cradle of Aviation. The Car is not finished, but they are gonna display it anyway. It's a day I have been looking forward to for some time

Wow, that is so exciting! I'm excited just reading it! And the car looks amazing! You're very lucky you know, especially if George decides to start making more replicas or sell fiberglass molds to build your own, you will have the original (well, the original mold)!
And I really do hope George decides to sell molds in the future because I would start saving now, haha.
So how is Anthony getting the design so close? I notice there have been some abominable replicas (like the one with HUGE sides) in the past; is George helping him with the details, now that the project is of importance to him?
I always wondered how anybody could build a replica when there are so very few shots of the back of the car to build on. I also wonder how accurate that ERTL die cast is. It looks way better than every other real replica so far (except yours), haha.
I found one of those ERTL models on Ebay and I would jump on it but the guy wants $200 and that's nuts.
Again, the best of luck, and I look forward to following your build once this one is done!

Oh yeah, one more thing, if the third car in this picture:
is the Thunderbird (as you guys figured), then I think they used the Thunderbird for the standoff scene. Why? Notice the chrome windshield trim...

Now if you could get Anthony to ask George what year and type of Thunderbird they used...

Again, the best of luck, and I look forward to following your build once this one is done! First off, thanks for all the interest...I love talking about The Car, not too many people care about it. It will be entirely up to George if he wants to build any replicas, so for that we'll have to see. I really think that Anthony is using the Ertl model as a main reference point. He built it very different from the design Dennis Braid used. Especially the front...the original had a completely new face...grill area, etc., while Anthony built it off the face of the Continental. Yeah, the Ertl models have gotten pretty pricey. Sometimes you can find a good bargain, just keep looking! I have one that was cast in raw metal...only one of 50 made! If I have it right, all three in the pic were Continental Mark III's. We figured that, the one on the far left is the #1 photo car. The other two were destroyed. Both were Everett Creach's stunt cars, used in various scenes. Ultimetly, one went thru the house, the other was barrel-rolled over the police cars. The Thunderbird(not pictured) was just a fitted shell(no engine, trans) to resemble The Car from a distance....that was shot from a 'car-canon' off the cliff at the end. Now here is the mystery....The car auctioned off in '83 is clearly NOT the original. It looks like one George put together for that event. Where is the original? Possibly under a tarp in on the Universal back lot, but no one can gain access back there. -Matt
