ASapientMachine (12/25/2013) I heard that the travel speed on those is comparatively slow to ,say, an air ram. But, then I do believe that the motor speed can be adjusted.
It takes 6-8 seconds to open the canopy (full 24" throw). I would rather that than something ramming open/shut the canopy at a fast speed. That will have very little margin of error and end up breaking things. The movie looks like it's fast because they just pulled it open and pushed it shut with a person off camera. To my knowledge hey didn't even use the actuator/mechanism for the different scenes in the film.

The sweet part about the actuators that I have is that they are as simple as reversing polarity to open/shut and they have limit switches built in on both ends so you don't have to worry about burning out the motors

Plus, once the windows are installed they'll add quite a bit of rigidity to the canopy in addition to the extra framework and bracing.
Do I look like someone with a plan? 0_o

Tim I posted this a while back but I thought if a fellow could laser cut this ,this would make a good window backing like yours then chrome minus the mesh. Are you going to have to remove the bolts out of the front of your canopy every time you change windows?I am confused why you would weld the nuts on. Once you put the bolts through would you not epoxy them and put the rubber backing then window then rubber washer then nut? what you see here would be on the inside.

I'm actually doing the reverse of what most people have done. What you mention is similar to what Kevin has done where the bolts stick through from the outside (counter sunk into the canopy) and point towards the inside of the cabin. Then you put the nuts on from the inside and body fill over the counter sunk bolt head on the outside of the canopy.
What I'm doing is putting the nuts on the back of the window frame, so that I can then screw in the bolts/washer from the inside into the frame.
Since our weather up here goes from +35 to -17 degrees Celsius I can't count on epoxy, or filler over top of counter sunk bolts coming from the outside in. The expansion/contraction of the metal in the heat/cold would crack the body filler around the metal and also give the epoxy a hard time.
So instead, I welded nuts to the back of a window frame and then glue/embed the window frame onto the canopy from the inside. This also allows me to use flat head screws/bolts from the inside for an almost flush finish. I can then basically cover the outer edge of the window with vinyl or even paint it to hide the screw/bolt heads.
