Well, you could mount the tires to the center, like a "standard" RC car, but for me that's one of the key elements that defines the tumbler- the wheels being mount to those "outrigger" arms.

The actual setup for the tires should be similar to "center mount" just turn them around so the steering control arm is towards the outside of the car body instead of towards the middle.

This is all like a jigsaw puzzle, where you also have to cut the funny shaped pieces yourself

I know this might sound obvious, but have you tried Ebay? Thats where I got mine. I have modded mine with independent steering the front just like the real one. I mounted servos in the front against the inside of the "panels" I hot glued them in place and the arms actuate from the inside out so you cant really see them. The tricky part was getting the wheels to actually pivot. I bought spindles and A-arms from a hobby shop and mounted  a set of RC truck tires to them so they would actually work. Let me see if I can find the pictures i took and just show you. Its kinda hard to explain.

Ok I never posted pics so let me see if it works. Here are a few shots during the project. Hopefully it helps explain. The last picture is a splitter you will need so both servos will work at the same time off one channel. Hope this idea helps.

Hey thanks Shaggy! That means alot coming from you. I read and read so many build logs on here and know that you're one of the main men. I just never posted much cause I didn't feel I had much to contribute until I saw the question about the RC Tumbler. I've been meaning to take some video of it in action and will try to make it a point now that I know there could be some interest.

I actually gutted the whole car and replaced with all hobby quality parts so it moves pretty good! Maybe that will be my project this week. I may call on you for some help to load it up. Or I suppose I can just throw it on my youtube account and link it somehow.

Thanks again!

Mike

Thanks! Actually it's not one of the models it's the 1/6th scale radio controlled car that Tyco made. They sold back in the day at walmart for around a hundred bucks. They only made them for a year or so and now the only place to find them is eBay or maybe craigslist if someone local has one. On the stock one the front wheels were just big solid plastic wheels with a solid shaft going through for support. They actually didn't even touch the ground. There was another single swivel type wheel underneath the car which rolled and was how it steered. It was really kinda cheesy hence why I did the mods to mine. I'm still working on the videos and hopefully will have them by this weekend.

Ok it took me a little longer than I had planned, but here is one video of the the wheels and the basics of how they work.  Im just going to paste the youtube link in here since im not sure how to get it on the site like I have seen some of the others. Let me know if there are any issues viewing it.

Cool video dude.

Looks like Youtube changed the embed code so it's not working with this site anymore for some reason. I'll have to look into it I guess. But cool video nonetheless.

I agree! absolutely Awesome! And I greatly appreciate the mention of my screen name! I feel special! I cant wait to see that thing driving!

Another thing, with that mod, it really cleans up the look of the front end, it looks more "Tumbler" and not so....

...crap.
