thanks Bean...ya know, I never even thought of measurements when I started my model. I originally wanted to make a "smaller" version and when i was done, it turned out bigger. so when I measured I got that 13 1/2 size. seeing the model was too narrow i came up with the width. I've been working with computers too long, so i haven't really had to figure stuff out like this. the math lesson helps, thank you. yeah and I think I do remember that about Daves shocks. (In the voice of HAL...) Hello Dave. are you there Dave? Where are the shocks now Dave?

Money money money. Without getting too detailed, I just re-financed to lower my ridiculous mortgage rate. after the closing there was some money that came to us. So what am I doing with the extra cash? Spending it on the wife of course! (Damn It!) well actually on her turbo eclipse...Brembo rotors, powder coated calipers, new K&N air filter, and possibly replacing the 16" rims with 17's...ahhh aint love grand? ....wait a NY minute... Hellloooo...what's up with the bat budget? well i just got GREAT news tonight. After the re-fi was done, the bank informed me that the loan was overpaid. and there is a check on the way. So ok honey, you're DONE. my turn. make room for tires, steel tubing, an axle and maybe...just maybe...shocks. note to self: tell wife after everything is delivered.

lol, yes lets DO wait until everything is delivered. And when she asked where it came from...tell her Wayne industries was having a blow-out sell and you just couldnt pass it up! And Chilebean was right on the money when it came to configuring new measurements. I did the same thing with my 1/6 batmobile, i just wasnt sure if my calculations were correct, but now that i see that Chilebean does the same thing, i know i was going in the right direction. Gewd Luck to you Sir, and may the Force be with you.....John Force that is.

So I'm getting closer to my tires....and thanks to George Dubya, I'll have money to put towards wheels in May. for now, it's steel, rubber, and an axle which brings up questions: I've bought stuff from junkyards before but I've never bought an axle before...do you look for age? Miles? When i know what the kind of differential that i want, is an older axle with less miles better than a newer one with more? I would think not, but I thought I'd bring this up to the people i now very much trust. Jack, Bean, Rusty, Shagg, and of course Big Wave Dave....come to think of it, anyone's comments I've read on this site. comments that just showed me how little i know. i thank all of you.

Hey Conrad, I think the order should be tires, axle, wheels. The tires sound good as 39" tall TSLs. Remember there are different tread patterns. The one you want has a zig zag pattern in the middle. Don't be afraid to check out slghtly used tires as guys buy them and then realize they are too aggressive. You should be able to save 50% over new which is about $1000 savings. All used axles should be considered used up. Don't let someone talk you into an axle being "slightly used". Assume it will have to be rebuilt as you will want to replace bearings, seals, brakes and at some point new gears. Since you might be taching out at 2500rpm and you Tumbler is traveling at 45MPH. That being said I'd go with the lowest priced axle you can find. Also I like older axles since there are more performance parts for them and the lug pattern will be in inches {no metric}Secondly I'd buy it from a axle rebuilder. Maybe someone that builds axles for trucks. Later they rarely will sell you a piece of junk since they are hoping to later be able to rebuild it for you. But when you get one from a junkyard the axle guys love to say you need to replace this and that... The axles I would recommend would come from a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck. These usually have one ton floating axles. You can buy these relatively cheap but a full rebuild will be about $1000 which you will need to do after you have driven the Tumbler around. I like Chevy, you like Fords and that's fine but remember this will not be a 9' with bracing like the movie car. This will be a truck axle. The only thing I think is better is a fully fabricated axle like my old one.Every thing was brand new and over built.....One and a half inch axles... Then do the wheel mock up thing with the 16.5 x 12 inch rims. definitely go cheap on those. I bought mine from Summit for $75 but I know you can get them cheaper. Remember you only need them to figure out the buldge on your tires....Then you can order those custom dullie rims with that special negative offset. Let me know if I can help with those calculations. Hope that helps, this is only my humble opinion...BWD

thanks again Sir Big Wave. I hear what you're saying about getting the axle from an axle shop...or a shop that specializes in trucks. While Chevy's "like a rock", and Ford is "Built tough" I'm just saying as long as it will deal with over 800lbs of rubber and wheels I'll be satisfied. I believe this is why you suggested a 1 ton truck axle. I'm open to this and will look for a place around here that knows what I'm looking for. I don't tell anybody that I'm building a batmobile, but I do tell them about the duallie setup...that's when they go.."what the hell are you building?". very few (actually none) so far associated the size of the duallies with the tumbler, but i'm guessing someone might. Hopefully that someone will be as enthusiastic as us in wanting to build this machine.
I think I will indeed pickup the 16 1/2 x 12 rims. I think you mean: mount, inflate, inspect side bulge. should I try the adapters? I'm thinking about it...but I feel like that setup would be wobbly compared to one HUGE rim. I can't remember what the original guys did. right now I'm too lazy to look it up cause I need pancakes. It's off to Ihop.

Hey Conrad I want to make sure you hear me saying buy a 16.5 x 12 cheap rim just for checking the buldge. You will need to know this to determine the offset. There is nothing wrong with adapters. Your total vehicle weight should be under 6,000 lbs, but you will have to custom fabricate a narrower axle. So its either narrower custom axle with adapters or original 1 ton axle with custom rims. I think you are going with an original axle so you will need custom rims.......The wheel adapters are 3" thick each to make the transition from a stock lug pattern to a wider duallie lug pattern. That adds 6" to the overall width of the rear end.... You can go for a while not telling the guys what you are doing but when you try to explain that the inside duallie is going 14" over your axle they want to know where are your springs going. Its a good idea to have some rear pictures of the Tumbler with you for reference. Once they stop laughing you'll be ok...I always like to pause and tell them take your time laugh it up....BWD
