Hey Stigno1, would love to see the tumber reversed engineered and built up again. About the carbon fibre work, I dont believe that the actually cost would add up to $22,000...you could use cf and also fibre glass to save costs.
To put things in perspective a 100meter by 1 linear meter roll of carbon fibre would cost around about $3000..give or take (at the moment its very expensive due to a world shortage as the AIRBUS planes that are being built have actually bought the worlds supply) but should be sorted by end of this year. But fibre glass which basically the same thing except with the only difference being its strength, its just that you need to use more of it to get the same strenght as the same carbon fiber panel. Assuming you wouldn't need something that strong you could just use a mix of carbon fibre plus fibre glass sandwich, so the top layer is carbon fibre and inside layers are fibre glass...and fibre glass only costs like $6 a meter..so you can see how you can save there. Or if you wanted to be real gangster you could use a hybrid cloth which consists of kevlar and carbon, the advantages being Strength + Impact resistance, or go all out kevlar panels, but you would compromise weight reduction but you would have a bullet proof car...what ever makes you happy.
The resin or glue which mixes with the cloth and then gives it its shape would cost around $300 for about 20Liters. Where it gets a little costly is the extra's you need in materials to make the actual parts..which is another lecture on its own...
I can go for ages about this stuff because its pretty cool...but just wanting you to have some ideas that it can be done and would like to see it done again...
And also im guessing most of the cost is the man hours gone into it..thats the most expensive part, because with composite materials its always all hand made...no mass produced china made machines involved....but since you will be doing it your self theirs also a saving there...

Well, maybe you don't take me seriously. I dont have vast amounts of money as you may have and I have to proceed with caution and respect for my family and be able to provide for them. So that Is why I must be certain I obtain the right donor car. ANy information that would help me on this site is well appreciated. I enjoy this site as many of you do. I am just looking for some tips and clues to make my build a success and not have to spend 250000 on it. Thank you Tom

Are you talking to me?? I was never talking about you, Tomandu. My point was that these random guys come on here talking all excited about some great project they are "fully preped to build" and then we never hear from them again. That was back in April! All I was saying is we don't hold our breath when some new guys comes on here with illusions of grandeur.

Ok- sorry got confused for a minute-- anyways - i dont have the mechanical background do build a tumbler from scratch. I need a donor car that can be modified keeping the engine and trans intact. The front steering of course would have to be totally fromn scratch ( with a lot of help)but I am willing to go for a "replicar' that looks like the tumbler but isnt as to avoid the wb boys . I dont mind some subtle differences and the only people that woudl know are the people on this site.... SO any suggestion out there ??? I woudl focus on the steering, fiberglass etc I thought of the Fiero, FIrebird and someone mentioned a baja rig...Up in Buffalo we don't see that many -- mostly converted vw into dune buggys....
Gotta do it

"The resin or glue which mixes with the cloth and then gives it its shape would cost around $300 for about 20Liters." OK... Ya, suuurrre. Star Cars just ordered a motorcycle and I picked up the glass for it this afternoon. I'm currently paying $156.00 per 5 gallon pale of resin, $135.00 for 5 gallons of clear marble gel, (I have the pigment with me) 50 bucks for a ball of string and 200 for a roll of chop strand mat. Don't even get me started on the F'ing Cali Hazmat charges! (and I picked this shit up!) $900.00 is what it cost me to buy the materials for a seat, front wheel cover, fairing, left and right wing and a go-kart body. What I'd like to know is... On what planet can you make an entire tumbler body with $300 bucks worth of resin?
