Polystyrene will melt right away, but polyurethane works like a champ. More expensive, but it saves a step and some work on your part.

This is an 87 Civic and the lights are way off

Just a thought, polystyrene foam ( Amofoam- from home depot works if you shellac it after you initially sand and form it to the shape desired, then you apply a coat of Bondo and finish the part off. I believe after that if you want to make a plug or copy the shape with fiberglass ,the polystyrene foam which is covered with shellac and bondo will not melt. But you have to go with shellac/bondo/ then fiberglass. The shellac helps the bondo bond to the foam and also creates a barrier of protection. This is the way I Fabricated alot of parts,ex: Side skirts and running boards for an 87 5.0 stang.

I've never tried the shellac but I have used Kilz paint. It's a stain barrier primer. I'll try the shellac next time.
