Hey all been glued to this forum for a week now hours a day... I want to build a street legal Tumbler. I want to keep the roof hatch like the movie, and was wondering about the legalities of having limited egress? Lights aren't a problem, but since it has such big blind spots does it need mirrors or air bags?

Hey Adam,
Good luck with your future build. I think the subject of airbags will depend on the state you live in, and how you plan on titling the tumbler. If you could find a donor title and registration plate from an old reconstructed vehicle( early 70's kit car), you can get away without a lot of the current safety features required on new vehicles. Mirrors of some type ( or cameras) for the blind spots are a necessity in every state I know of.
Limited egress shouldn't be a problem. It never was for any other car with a hatch opening. ..ie 89 coupe, sterling, etc.
I believe this info is accurate, but you should check with your local DMV.

Thank you I wasn't sure if cameras could substitute, I'll have to look into that donor title and registration plate thanks for the tip... good to hear about the top hatch though, I'll check before I do any actual bulding still gathering information for awhile though, stockpile parts and the sort.

For anyone looking to do a street legal tumbler definately check with your states DOT custom vehicle safety requirements. For Iowa No airbags are required. Here is the exerpt for the windshield: Windshields. Every motor vehicle shall be equipped with a laminated safety glass windshieldthat complies with and bears the approval marking of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)Z 26.1 Standard. The windshield shall be in such a position that it affords continuous horizontal frontal protection to the driver and front seat occupants. The minimum vertical height of the unobstructed windshield glass shall be 6 inches. This paragraph does not preclude the use of a windshield that can be folded down to a horizontal position, provided that the windshield can be firmly fastened in both the vertical and horizontal positions. b. Side and rear glass. Side and rear glass is not required in motor vehicles. If present, however, this glass must be either laminated or tempered safety glass bearing the approval of the ANSI Z 26.1Standard. 450.2(7) Driver visibility. Each motor vehicle shall provide the driver with a minimum outward horizontal vision capability of 90 degrees each side of a vertical plane passing through the fore and aft centerline of the vehicle. This plane of vision may be interrupted by window framing and windshield door support posts not exceeding 4 inches in width at each side location. If you plan on making the movie style canopy I.E. making it open the same as in the movie: 450.2(4) Door latches. Every motor vehicle that is equipped with doors leading directly into a compartment that contains one or more seating accommodations shall be equipped with mechanically actuated door latches which firmly and automatically secure the door when pushed closed and which allow each door to be opened from the inside by the actuation of a convenient lever, handle or other nonelectric device. Interior handles must be visible.450.2(14) Fenders and mud flaps. Rescinded IAB 9/8/10, effective 10/13/10.450.2(15) Bumpers. Rescinded IAB 9/8/10, effective 10/13/10.
