I have a fiberglass project that I need to do for work.  Basically I need to build a small section of the back end of a boat.  Actually, if you're familiar with bassboats, I am building a mock-up of the bilge area that runs from the transom to the livewell.  It's a mock-up/demo unit for demonstrating different livewell plumbing systems.  I just started mocking it up out of blue foam, just as a means to work out the design and dimensions...

Here is the foam mock-up.  This was just a design tool and won't be used in anyway in the final piece.  Basically it was just an alternative to sketching it on paper— kind of a hands-on 3D sketch.

Hey Tim, welcome back.  Okay I have to admit I have no idea what you are building?  None the less I am looking forward to seeing what you do next.  Lots of things have happened around here since you last visited.  Several guys are building Tumblers and rumor has it that one of CLTC members has already built one and it's not Bob.  Hummmm....  Away I do hope you will hang around and take a look at everything.

Well, I don't work for a boat company— I work for a company that makes products for boat companies.  Specifically, we make livewell systems for fishing boats.

The thing I'm making simulates the back of the livewell (where you put your fish after you catch them) and the area where all the plumbing goes.  It will be used to demonstrate different plumbing options.  It will be used at trade shows primarily,

I've looked around a bit, but haven't seen any new builds yet.  I'd like to see them though, especially the Tumblers.

No, I haven't done anything with the '89 go-cart since you were here, Justin.  Hopefully, however, I have lost weight since that picture!  Geesh!  And the way I'm standing looks like I have girl hips or something... Nice.

So today I plan to build a mold.  For something this simple, I don't need to build a plug and take a mold from it.  I will just build the mold directly.  Basically, I am going to build the same thing I just built only now I will build it out of wood and slightly larger.  Larger so when I lay-up the part it will be about the same size at the blue foam mock-up I made.  A wooden mold won't last as long, but I only need to make a few of these.

Then I will cover the wood with bondo, fillet the corners and sand it smooth.  then I will spray it with tooling gel-coat.

Okay, one more picture...  Biscuits only, no glue, no brads... (not yet anyway)

The biscuits really make it strong.  Look at how that fly is STANDING on it!!

hahahahahaha. The real test of strength!

Keep us posted! I might be finding myself in TN in a few weeks, Tim. If I can swing from East TN to Central, I will drop by!
