It looks like the bike is powered by hydraulic motors. That could explain the "engines in the wheels" comment. Maybe a single-cylinder engine powering a hydraulic pump.

But then again, i haven't seen the movie yet.. so what do i know?

Looks cool, but damn it looks uncomfortable to ride. And people think MY crotch rocket would be uncomfortable ... HA!

And I'm not the smartest person in the world, but it would seem to me that tires THAT big on a bike would make it very unstable while cornering.

It has all the keys to having a internal combustion engine.  Small battery, exhaust pipe, radiator, spark plug wires.

I agree with Jack, all of those items are visable when you look near the "chest plate" of the Pod.   The spark plug boot is located near the front shock, its colored blue.   Above it you can see the engine head cover (possible OHV), and  drooping not far to the "passenger side" of it all is a discolored pipe, which is the exhaust.    If you watch on youtube, where people have snuck "behind the scene's" of the bat pod while in filming, you can hear a single cylinder engine revving as the bike takes off.

Yes - WOW - it's a work of art. It looks great in these various images, and it works brilliantly in the new film.

Still, I'm not too sure about the name: why's it called the "Batpod" rather than, more simply, the "bat-bike" or "bat-cycle"?

I understand the logic - in the new films the batmobile is not referred to as such, but is called the "Tumbler". So, accordingly, the batcycle is termed the "Batpod".

The etymology of the word 'pod' is, of course, applicable - since, in aerospace technology it refers to a compartment, compact and detachable, used for carrying personnel. But I think this is stretching the application somewhat.

I know others might disagree, but for me the simple designation "Bat-bike" / "Bat-cycle" is more appropriate (since it is definitely a bicycle of sorts). Then again, "Batpod" may be more cool ...

I'd answer your question, but it would spoil it for those who still havent been lucky enought to see the Dark Knight movie.   When you see HOW the Batpod comes about, you will understand why it is called a "pod"

Hint:  What happens in space related movies when the ship is about to destoyed?  everyone excapes in pods right?

Notice how much the front tire is wearing on the sides.  Batman's gotta find time to rotate for even tire wear!
