I just thought, a year after WB Copywrite ending, there would be EVERYONE buying & selling kits & moulds. I mean come on, why cant one guy sell the front fender, then another sell the rear cover, another person sell the side intakes, a canopy, etc.
I'm sure there would be a lot of people out there who would be happy to buy a canopy, then the glass and so on to build up the car piece by piece.
Is it illegal to sell a fibreglass piece that just happens to be LIKE a piece of the 89? If you aint selling the whole kit, can you still be sued?
Would DC be that upset, if a lot of 89's popped up in the world?

OR

Why not a "Build an 89 Monthly" DH?
Every month your CLTC magazine comes complete with your own bit of the 89. Each issue tells the sad tale of WB & B.Butts. History of how each part is made, who sourced the item, where to fit it? Plus, dont forget to pack the pages full of photos (keep Tim & Jack happy).

Issue #1 could come with a free 89 keyring.

Any thoughts people?

I'm all for that!!! I'm in the process of starting to build my own 89 but I would much rather buy a kit or a set of molds. The piece a month thing though would probably take too long for me. I'm too impatient lol.

Whats so weird about wanting parts or some molds? I've been looking all over the net for a kit or some molds to build an 89 and so far i've found zilch,nada,diddly squat.My wife and kids think i'm nuts but judging by the other posts in here i'm in good company. lol Just looking for some help building an 89 any info would be greatly appreciated.

Not a bad idea. It'd be nice if building an 89 was like building a Night Rider repica - where you have several suppliers and you can ordeer just the front clip - or a dash or something. I suppose people are still afriad of the wrath of WB (as they probably should be.)

So many people come here looking to find an '89 "kit", seemingly with the attitude that they'll just order the kit, get it in the mail next week and put it together over the weekend.

You say you're in the process of starting to build your own 89. Really? That's great, we'd love to see some pictures. I thought you were looking for parts or "moulds" ? What have you built? I don't mean to be harsh towards you in particular, but you asked...

by saying i'm in the process of building an 89 I meant that so far i'm gathering as many specs and info as I can to figure out what I need to build an 89.So far I have no pics because everything is only on paper.A kit would be nice to expedite the process but for now funds are tight and i have to settle with alternative ways in building it.Leaning toward the fiberglass sandwich method.And I dont think your being harsh. I'm sure you've had your fair share of guys coming in here and other boards whining about all the kits and whatnot.

Wyle, what type of car are you going use for a donor? Are you planning on making an everyday vehicle out of this project or mostly just for show? It would probably be cheaper as a show car because you wouldn't have to worry about all of the little things to make it street legal such as mirrors, hydraulic suspension to bring it to acceptable level and to avoid getting stuck on any bump in the road, a good engine, exhaust, etc. Thought I am not at all telling you what you should do with your own vehicle. I think it is awesome that you are going to embark on this endeavor. We'd definately like to see some pictures and keep us updated.

OK... then "I'll" be harsh...

"NO ONE... the the exception of "the Bob's" has ever made a full-size car from scratch and finished it that wasn't "In the biz"!"

Hasn't been done so far in 15 years.

Closest thing I've seen is Tim.

There are a lot of "replicas" built on everything from Opels to Datsuns to vettes. And these are all great cars in their own right, but NONE of them have people lining up to "buy kits".

This car is NOT a Knight Rider car!

KIDS buy 300 dollar 82 Trans Ams and put a 100 dollar nose on it that they bought from eBay. Spray it black with cans in the driveway, a 30 (that's right THIRTY!) dollar JC Whitney scanner light and tell everyone at the local diner "Yep! Mine's the original car!"

I was there at the second Knight Nationals and the 5 unfinished cars that were there literally laughed out of the Trans Am Nationals, in later years, they held their Knight Nationals in the parking lot across the street from the Airport lot that hosted the TA Nats.

But I give these guys credit, they stuck it out... got better cars and finally put together a show worthy of driving to Ohio to visit. But it was a LONG time coming.

But a Batmobile (of any sort) is not a Knight Rider kit.

Imagine how much of an a$$ you'd look like with your donor Caprice stretched and only the front clip of the 89 attached to your chassis? (Assuming you found a way to keep the rest of the Caprice in-tact)

Would you cruise the local car shows with your Caprice with a custom "Bat front" ?

Would people say "Awesome Batmobile! Is it the "real" one?"

NOT A CHANCE!!! You'd get laughed at so hard you'd probably run and hide.

The point here is this car is NOT a pile of parts you can simply stick on another car.

Or a red Torino you can put a white stripe on. Or an orange Charger with a Radio Shack antenna and stickers.

Even the 66 would be a rolling laugh if you didn't finish it. Try building one with only a grey primered body (and even that's not cheap) and a motorcycle helmet (that's legal BTW) and cruise it out in front of your local movie theatre.

Exactly how many people are begging you for a photo op? How many hot chicks are lining up to sit on the hood or go for a ride?

A 66 looks like a$$ without canopies and an interior.

Only Sharp gets away with a black primered body on the freeway, but that boy drove his primered 89 with welding clamps holding the canopy on. He's crazy! (And a cool guy!)

YOU HAVE TO FINISH THE BATMOBILE BEFORE IT LOOKS LIKE ANYTHING!!!!

And that "ain't cheap!"

I laugh my a$$ off at all of these people claiming to make a car for less than 40K. Won't ever happen.

Look at what Kevin's got in his car? His INTERIOR has set him back half that already. (You BOUGHT those $500 panels from ECS parts shop RIGHT Kev????... right???? Hello Kevin???? OK... I know... just like mine, Parts Shop gave you the "non-serviceable" ones. hehehehe... I've got a great "non-servicable F-15C joystick. Somehow the sticker fell off and the top button "sticks"... Damn! "non-serviceable" what a shame.)

And he didn't even put the $2000 Recaro's in it yet, electronics or upholstery.

Then you've got people only budgeting $2000 for an interior.

Not gonna happen!!!

NEVER gonna happen!!!

These things COST MONEY!!!! lots of money!!!!

If you haven't banked 40 G's to START the project, you'll never finish.

We've got a ton of 89 "lawn ornaments" but very few finished cars in private hands.

Everyone seems (like the above post quotes) to think that you can grab some spray foam, "whip up" a body, pull molds off of it and sell the "kits" for a thousand bucks (the current "dream" price for a kit) and sell enough to finish your car and cover your design costs.

Tim knows EXACTLY how F'ing long it takes to carve one of these things to scale...

(So how long have you been working on your mini kit? 4 or 5 weeks?)

And yours is WHAT scale?

You make a one-off hand carved Batmobile and your committing your 2 car garage for the next 2 or 3 years! Talk to the wife about that one!

Now, that's not to say that I'm out to kill anyone's ownership dreams... lots of people on this board are really making great strides to build the car of their dreams. But not ONE of them who has an actual car (not sketches and drawings), or even a body (of any size), will post here that it was easy, cheap or quick.

But I AM on my soapbox for people to be a little more realistic about two things:

You're never going to see a time where EVERYONE has one of these cars, uses them for "charity" work and we can all get together to have a "Bat Nats". Parking a whole bunch of similar movie cars together destroys the public's illusion of the uniqueness of the car and turns away more people than it attracts. (Most people don't actually believe there are more than one car anyway)

And that WB is EVER going to let go of the copyright for the 89. I've said this a million times and I always draw "YOU DON'T KNOW SH@#!" flames from people who are so sure they KNOW copyright law. All of those people who were so certain have discovered that the licenses were renewed with Hot Wheels and the box set and WB is tougher than ever on the 89.

It will NEVER go away.

The 66 was a legal loop-hole because a ton of people take credit for the car.
