Batman Related Key Chains, Key Rings, and Key Fobs Collecting

A very popular Batman related collecting category that is often
displayed in picture frames by collectors. The larger collections are
often displayed by individual characters, as well as, by other
collector themed subsets. Batman related chains, rings, and fobs range
in price from 1.00 to several hundred dollars. Ebay is an excellent
source for those wanting to add a frame displayed collection.  Batman
related keychains displayed in picture frames hold their value. These
displays frequently sell for several to many times what the original
owner spent in creating their displays. It all depends on the
individual, chains, rings, fobs, and the eclectic collective quality
of the presentation.

Key fob is a word used to describe a key chain and several other
similar items and devices. The word fob is believed to have originated
from watch fobs, which existed as early as 1888. The fob refers to an
ornament attached to a pocket-watch chain.
A key fob is a generally decorative and at times useful item many
people often carry with their keys, on a ring or a chain, for ease of
tactile identification, to provide a better grip, or to make a
personal statement. The word fob may be linked to the low German
dialect for the word Fuppe, meaning "pocket", however, the real origin
of the word is uncertain. Fob pockets (meaning 'sneak proof' from the
German word Foppen) were pockets meant to deter thieves. A short "fob
chain" was used to attach to items, like a pocket watch, placed in
these pockets.
Fobs vary considerably in size, style and functionality. Most commonly
they are simple discs of smooth metal or plastic, typically with a
message or symbol such as that of a logo (as with conference trinkets)
or a sign of an important group affiliation. A fob may be symbolic or
strictly aesthetic,

Keychains are one of the most common souvenir and advertising items.
Keychains are commonly used to promote businesses. A standard
advertising key chain will carry the businesses name and contact
information and often a logo. In the 1950s and 1960s, with the
improvement of plastic manufacturing techniques, promotional items
including keychains became unique. Businesses could place their names
on promotional keychains that were three-dimensional for less cost
than the standard metal keychains.

Keychains are small and inexpensive enough to become promotional items
for larger national companies that might give them out by the
millions. For example, with the launch of a new movie or television
show, those companies might partner with food companies to provide a
character keychain in each box of cereal.

Batman Related Key Chains, Key Rings, and Key Fobs Collecting
Part 2
I never realized how much of these are available for Batman related collectors.
There are literally thousands of these on line.
Many of these are beautiful miniature works of sculptural art.
For instance, every Batmobile, Tumbler, BatPod and Batplane is available.
As are, Batman and every related villain and other characters.

BATMAN RELATED RINGS
Many Batman related collectors have at least one Batman related ring
and some have collections that number into the hundreds.
Part 1
Wikipedia
Essential Ring Knowledge

“Although tracing the exact history is difficult, the custom of giving
and receiving finger rings dates back over approximately 6,000 years.

A ring is a round band, usually of metal, worn as an ornamental piece
of jewelry around the finger, or sometimes the toe; it is the most
common current meaning of the word "ring". Strictly speaking a normal
ring is a finger ring (which may be hyphenated); other types of rings
worn as ornaments are earrings, bracelets for the wrist, armlets or
arm rings, toe rings and torc or neck rings, but except perhaps for
toe rings, the plain term "ring" is not normally used to refer to
these.

Rings are most often made of metal but can be of almost any material:
metal, plastic, stone, wood, bone, glass, or gemstone. They may be set
with a stone or stones, often a gemstone such as diamond, ruby,
sapphire or emerald.

Did Batman ever wear a ring?
Batman: In Darkest Knight (1994)
DC Comics
Format: One-shot
Publication date: 1994
Number of issues: 1
Main character(s): Batman Sinestro

Batman: In Darkest Knight is a one-shot comic book, published in 1994
and written by Mike W. Barr with art by Jerry Bingham. The comic is an
Elseworlds story in which Bruce Wayne becomes the Green Lantern
instead of Hal Jordan. This one change creates a domino effect which
alters many events and characters in the DC Universe. The story draws
heavily from related Batman comics, including Batman: Year One and The
Killing Joke. The comic is dedicated to the memory of Bill Finger, who
was "present at the birth of both" according to the afterword.
Plot
The story begins after Bruce Wayne's disastrous first attempt at crime
fighting. As he sits in his study, wounded, he pleads with his dead
father's image for some means by which to terrify the criminals of
Gotham City. Suddenly, a ghostly image comes from a bust before him,
telling him that he has been chosen. The figure heals his wounds and
leads him to a crashed rocket on his property. Inside, the dying Green
Lantern Abin Sur gives Bruce his power ring and tells him to wait for
contact from its masters. Bruce hides the rocket in the Batcave
beneath his mansion and begins his crime fighting career.”

First appearance

All-American Comics Number Sixteen (July 1940)

“The first appearance of a power ring was in All-American Comics
Number Sixteen on July 14, 1940, the flagship title of comic book
publisher All-American Publications, which featured the first
appearance of Alan Scott. Creator Martin Nodell has cited Richard
Wagner's opera cycle The Ring of the Nibelung and the sight of a
trainman's green railway lantern as inspirations for the combination
of a magical ring and lantern.

Alan Scott's ring is powered by the Green Flame, a magically empowered
flame contained within a metallic orb that fell from space. The orb
was found by a lamp maker named Chang, who fashioned into a lantern
and ring. Later writers revised this to be a fragment of an object
called the Starheart, the result of Guardians of the Universe
collecting and isolating most of the magic forces in the universe.
This early version of the ring is shown as being powerless against
wooden objects.

When the Green Lantern character was reinvented, beginning with the
introduction of Hal Jordan, the magical ring concept was replaced with
a scientifically based one. The new version of the ring is created by
the Guardians of the Universe, who also create the Green Lantern
Corps.”

Part 4
Batman Decoder Rings
Some try to pass these off on EBay as early originals. They are in
fact modern fabrications built around the decoder ring concept.

None of the early decoders were in the form of finger rings, but
"secret compartment" rings were common radio program premiums.

To complete the story, by the early 1960s, "secret decoder rings" had
entered the lexicon, so some people developed a few. The best of the
lot was the PF [Tennis Shoes] Decoder Ring, which was associated with
the Jonny Quest television show. It substituted letters for letters,
and even had a secret compartment! Later, Kix cereal produced a Kix
Secret Agent Decoder Ring, which was a cereal premium.

Most Expensive Piece of American Comic Art Ever Sold
By Alice Yoo on May 9, 2011
Like My Modern Met on Facebook
mymodernmet.com

“Guess what you’re looking at? Ok, so the title gave it away. This is
the single most valuable piece of American comic art ever to sell. The
original art from Page 10, issue #3 of Frank Miller and Klaus Janson's
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (DC, 1986) was recently brought for
$448,125 as part of Heritage Auctions' May 5 Vintage Comics and Comic
Art Auction.”

"Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns defined the best of 1980s
comics, and has since been universally acknowledged as one of the most
important and influential stories ever published ," said Ed Jaster,
Senior Vice President of Heritage Auctions, "and no image from that
important comic series is more iconic than this Splash Page. It's a
little surprising, yes, but fitting that this piece is now the most
expensive piece of American comic art ever sold at auction."

“I’ve always loved that drawing," commented Miller, when asked before
the auction what his thoughts on its imminent sale were. "Danced
around my studio like a fool when I drew it. I hope it finds a good
home.”

“Showing the caped crusader with his trusty sidekick soaring high
above Gotham City, the drawing is emblematic of the entire Batman
storyline.”

“So who plunked down the almost half a million dollars for this
original drawing? The buyer is an anonymous collector. (How fitting.)”

Here is an image of Greg Staple's original "The Dark Knight" that sold on EBay near the end of 2012 for 25,000.00 and is now believed to be valued between 50-100,000.00.
