1:18 Hotwheels Machine Gun Doors Question

I apologize in advance if this has already been discussed, but I just got the 1:18 Hotwheels Batmobile (NOT the crappy looking "battle damaged" version) and had a question about the machine gun doors for those that own this model... It looks like I have to snap the doors off to get the machine guns to come out, but then to the doors go back on? Or is it once they are snapped off, that's it and I have to leave them lying around?? It would have been so much nicer if they made the doors slide open or something.

Oh, and does the front turbine come out in this model version?

Thanks for any answers you all can provide.

RE: 1:18 Hotwheels Machine Gun Doors Question

No, they roll over sideways to reveal the guns and the engine will pull out the front.

RE: 1:18 Hotwheels Machine Gun Doors Question

Man, I can be here all night answering questions.

Ok, this was my project at Hot Wheels. I also did the damage version but that's a loooong story. It came out like crap and the other concepts we had were all shot down by WB. The original prototype model I worked on had spring loaded machine gun doors that blew off just like in the film. You wanna know why we didn't do them? Child safety

The best, and cheapest compromise was the rotating doors. BTW, the Studio Scale RC model and parts of the hero Onstar car were scanned in to create the 1/18 diecast model. The details were butchered by our friendly Hong Kong crew when the tooling patterns were created. Boy I sound disgruntled huh?

RE: 1:18 Hotwheels Machine Gun Doors Question

Hey Dave, (me again)

So what details were butchered?? I thought the car was relatively dead on (for 1/18th scale) with the possible exception of the missing fuel port on the passenger side. I'd love to have seen it before.

RE: 1:18 Hotwheels Machine Gun Doors Question

Hey Tim, imagine running into you again

The side pieces were screwed because portions were molded in diecast. All of that side detail was supposed to be dark wash VUM instead. PLUS, the interior had full molded detailing on all the bezels and it turned into a big label

The slide out engine detailing is also all wrong. That bugged me most because I spent about an hour digging through junk at WB and found 2 engine props from Returns. I documented them, sent that info to China, and got back Concord engines I guess

RE: 1:18 Hotwheels Machine Gun Doors Question

You're right Dave.
Please answer all the questions that haven't been answered here, please.

There's about 230 topics and I'd say about 1/7th of'em are some legic topics begging for serious answering.

And those hotwheels diecast rock!
I keep buying one every month just for b/c it's that good.

RE: 1:18 Hotwheels Machine Gun Doors Question

Dave,
All of us here thank you for your hard work on the project. I my self have been waiting for a 1/18 die-cast ever since the first movie in 89, I think it is safe to say everyone has. Do you have any photos of the prototype you are willing to post here??????? We sure would love to see them. As for the battle damaged story.... go ahead ... share it. Nothing lke a good story about the Keaton Car, especially from someone who had direct involvement in it, and tell us also about the ideas that WB shot down.... go on.... dish the dirt!!!!!!

RE: 1:18 Hotwheels Machine Gun Doors Question

Ahhh...the battle damage huh? Well...that concept came from me, yes...BUT, no

After the first 1989 car was complete, we (back when I was in HW) wanted to reuse the tooling and make some sort of mini-diorama. The first idea was to repaint the car as it was in Returns. Not a lot of changes but with a snowy molded base and a little 1/18 scale Batman holding out his speargun. The sample I made up (on weekends like a madman) came out great. First bummer...WB, they said what's the difference??? Second problem...cost. Ok, on to the next diorama. How about the Batmobile in the Batcave with engine sticking out and some cool equipment hooked up? Bruce stepped out for a minute. I removed some areas of paint so it looked like it went through the Axis chemical factory. WB looks at it...nope.

Ok, now rewind a bit, a few months earlier I took one of the big studio scale castings we had and created a base for it, made wheels and all of the accessories and it went to the Children with AIDS foundation charity. I think it sold to some docter in Georgia for about $11,000! That car needed some excitement at that scale so I added bullet hits and some weathering. The thing is it works at that scale only! You wouldn't even see that damage in 1/18 scale. Know what I'm talkin' about? So management by now is desperate and they end up sending pics of that charity model to China to duplicate it on to the 1/18 car...get it? By now I washed my hands of the whole thing and was knee-deep with the Pixar "Cars" property. When that damaged 1/18 car hit the shelves...I got all the calls!!

It was a rushed, sloppy job. I tried to help but after the first ideas were shot down, I walked away. THEN REALLY walked away! Not sure how to post pics but I'll send someone images of the big 1/7th charity model, along with all sorts of prototype pics.

Ok, coffee...

Dave

Dave, feel free to send me any pictures you can. I am working on a Gothic Avenger kit car (Replica) and I'm sure your pictures would really help in the constructions. Thanks for all of your wonderful stories. Jack

RE: 1:18 Hotwheels Machine Gun Doors Question

I just bought my 3rd 1/18th today. This is the first time I've seen it in a store. It was at Target for $19.99 which isn't any special price but for some reason I just couldn't leave it there. This one has the new packaging. It was kind of funny because the check-out girl took it and said "Mine, mine" so obviously she loved the car.
