Yet another Dave Thread

Hey Dave

What's this?

 From: autoprops713 | Posted: 3/2/2005 2:25:04 AM |

RE: Yet another Dave Thread

The one on the left read "front" and was like someone mentioned in another thread, for the front hydraulics. The button on the right read "Rear Fire". I kinda guessed what that was and with all of the Forever cars parked behind it...I didn't touch it. Actually, now that I think about it...maybe I should've.

The "turntable" Returns car had a "canopy open" switch under the same gas cap. It worked but I'm not sure why if it was built just for the turning thing in the film. It also had no interior.

RE: Yet another Dave Thread

Good God took me forever to find the previous thread.

Dave one more Q.

Tat gas cap, is it located in the same place as discussed in this thread?

RE: Yet another Dave Thread

That's just one of the two fender mounted A/C Cobra style gas caps. Here is the picture of the third cap. Dave why wasn't this third gas cap on the 1/18th? I know Cost, right?

RE: Yet another Dave Thread

Not to convolute the subject any further but...

What is that rod over the cockpit in the Daffy picture Jack posted? Dave, you said the OnStar cars were the actual hero cars. If so I don't remember that rod in the movies. I'm guessing it's some type of retrofit to keep the canopy system operating.

One thing I noticed from all the great photos Dave sent is that the car looks beat. You would think with WB's resources they could afford to have a knowledgeable person to maintain and repair the cars. It looks like they just showboat them around then throw them back in the garage.

RE: Yet another Dave Thread

That bar is a linear actuator used to open and close the canopy. They apparently removed it for many shots in "Batman", but it was there in at least one scene, where you can see Keaton use it to get out of the vehicle. Jack sent me a screen shot of this, I will see if I can find it.

Great new icons...

RE: Yet another Dave Thread

Here is one of the pictures that Jack sent me. You can see the actuator is disconnected from the canopy and retracted.

RE: Yet another Dave Thread

I'll be damned.

I saw the movie like millionth times and never noticed those.

Have you watched it frame by frame? I have....

RE: Yet another Dave Thread

Confusing huh? Ok, first...the 1/7 scale model that we patterned off and the "hero" Onstar car had 2 "Cobra" style gas caps, one on each side. These were the large flip-top racing versions same as the top pic. When we did the scanning to make the 1/18 version...these were on there. That other "motor-cycle style" cap was on one car only and I THINK that it was for fuel (the other 2 caps had buttons underneath...I know, confusing). We saw that car at WB that had the 3 caps (the Daffy car)but I assumed that the 3rd one was sort of an accident versus a deliberate design item so I left it off.

Tim's right about the actuator and a couple of the 1989 Batmobiles at WB had them in place BUT they told us to "leave it off" for the 1/18 car. That's why if you notice, most of the canopy opening scenes are shot from an angle where you can't see the rod.

Vman, what's funny is I spent a good deal of time walking around the archive building with the head guy there. I asked him if he was a fan of anything in here and he said "Oh, no". From what he was telling me WB intentionally hire people that "don't give a crap" about any of these props. That way there is no conflict of interest and they are simply librarians versus people that actually "care" and MIGHT be tempted. I mean there was stuff EVERYWHERE in there and one thing was leaning against another.

RE: Yet another Dave Thread

Thanks for the photo Tim. I never noticed the actuator. So in this scene they must have had someone outside the shot open the canopy manually. I'm going to watch the car scenes again tonight and look for other stuff.

I just can't wrap my brain around the archive guy Dave... How could you go to work where there are Batmobiles everywhere (and other cool movie stuff) and not give a damn? Did you check to see if the guy had a pulse?

Also, how can they tell if someone gives a crap? If they find out you think it's cool do they fire you?

Jeff

RE: Yet another Dave Thread

I don't understand why the buttons would be hidden there?

So to film the shot of batmobile rotating, someone had to open that gas cap and hit the button and quickly close the cap and get out of the shot?

Same with the flame scene??

RE: Yet another Dave Thread

Jeff, yeah I here ya. Those guys that work there are either accountant types OR shop guys. Either one is not a fan and YES, they sure can tell if you're TOO into this stuff. You mean you couldn't point out another batmobile nut walking on the other side of the street? Not sure if you'd get fired but Ohhhhhh....the temptation....

I don't think the buttons actually made something happen that second. Maybe they are more of a "set and arm" type of thing and then a guy with a remote lights up the rear, or rotates the thing. Inside the rotating car and another one was a high end remote control on the driver seat. They didn't know anything about it. I gave up asking questions because they just had no clue. The Batmobile that rotates was used to do other things also but they couldn't tell me exactly what that was either.

RE: Yet another Dave Thread

So you never got to take the batmobile out for a spin?

Did you at least get to sit in the cockpit?

Last one. The side intakes not being cut out should hit home for the replica builders. This is how theirs come.

RE: Yet another Dave Thread

I have that OnStar picture, but I don't remember seeing it before. That's odd.
