How they built the Tumbler

Well I guess I owe somebody an apology. I had no idea how well built that car is. It is a tank. I did notice they added rear bumpers for one of the scenes but other then that it looked as if it performed pretty dang well. No way I will attempt to build a replica. Best of luck to you Bob.

The build video on the SE Batman Begins DVD is awesome. I only wish the 89 build video would have been as good.

RE: How they built the Tumbler

well, you got some unique shots in the SE 89', movie looks like. I am going to pick up a copy, just to have. It is what got me into all this.

If you look at the costume making of BB, you will see exactly what I have been doing for more than 10 yrs. All the foam injecting, baking, sewing, trimming, bodycasting. I do everything exactly as they do, only I have no crew (course I have no deadline). Only minor differences are, I have perfected the art of mechanical sculpting to a point that I don't have to pull hard copies for sanding. Some minor differences in the moldmaking. I don't like to drill holes for keys, because they can wear with time, but all the multiple copies of bodycasts, ya, you have to have all that stuff, because if you don't you won't have any proper place to put the suit, or pieces when they're done. Manniquins will NOT work on a suit like this. Yup, it takes all those huge mixers, and injection guns, and oven. I don't have a "victorian mangler" to crush out the water, I just crush it by hand in my workshop sink, no big deal, you still put it back in the oven to dry just like they do. I sew up all my undersuits from scratch as well, because they will look so much better than anything that's available to buy, and they have to be done in a certain way. It takes a whole day just to glue on a torso, or one pair of legs. The suit done movie style is a huge project. But,, all this is the legacy of the 89' movie, including the car.

Hey Jack, i was just wondering who you were refering to. I remember getting in a big debate with you guys when i first joined this board about the Tumbler and its "toughness". No big deal, just wondering who you were refering to. Any of you guys got an update on the Tumbler replica?

Thanks

I finally got around to watching that segment last night. I watched it again and again...and again, and again...I love that car. I wish they had today's technology to build the Keaton car like that back in the day. The 89 is what I've grown up with, and I will always love it, but the Balemobile is my favorite. Sorry guys.

RE: How they built the Tumbler

It's a very good segment - I've watched it a few times myself. Good to see the details of those panels that pop out when it's going for a rampless arc.
I wouldn't have minded seeing the original test frame, the one where the front end collapsed on the first test-jump. Mind you, I imagine it was the same frame shown, but the footage they did show must have been after they'd sorted out the front suspension.
I'm also glad to see a bit of footage of the camouflage version.
Anyone know what happened to that? Did they film what they needed with it, then re-paint it black? It appears to have been a 'hero' one, with moving flaps and all...
I've never seen any sign of the camo one on display anywhere...

Nice vehicle; that DVD set really feeds into my obsession.

Batman Begins : Special creatures (that what my kids call it!). The Tumbler film is good, a little short but good.

Ive decided NOT to build an 89. Sorry guys.

I will now build a TARDIS go back in time to the late 80's and help ANTON and the team work on building HIS 89, then claim a car as my fee.

This is the most practical way for me to get my own.

RE: How they built the Tumbler

Did anyone find the finders keepers segment, where a prototype tumbler was trying to squeeze its way between the two cars, but it went on top of them instead? :

Why cant you use a sand rail car for some of this construction?

RE: How they built the Tumbler

I was at an airshow today, and the navy had a display setup with one of the sand rail cars that the navy seals use in the desert. Pretty cool actually. Looked like it would be an absolute blast driving around. Especially considering the engine was rated at 200hp/200ft.lbs torque. I kept looking at the big tires, and the all black cage....screamed tumbler.

RE: How they built the Tumbler

I have a question about the front steering:
Are the steering linages hidden further back near the body? I know each wheel has an indipendant single swingarm with a spindle attached, but unless it's steering eac side independantly like a tank, the wheels have to be connect somewhere for steering. Bob D, any comments?

Here is a simplified diagram of how I think it works. Does this make any sense to you?

RE: How they built the Tumbler

The steering worked both ways. There was the system like Tim posted, with the wheel controling both front wheels at once. In addition, the rear wheels were controlled with brakes on each side. This is how the stunts like the 180 in the bus depot were pulled off with such ease.

RE: How they built the Tumbler

I've read somewhere that the backwheel needs to be stopped by a handbreak for the tumbler to have better steering (left or right depending on the direction of the turn).

RE: How they built the Tumbler

Just watched "Easter egg" footage of the Tumbler backing into the cars. If you watch carefully you will see that the cars front ends drop just before the Tumbler hits. It may have been the original idea for the Tumbler to roll over the cars. What's also odd is that in the first shot you see the bumpers and then in the second shot there are no bumpers and the cars are positioned differently.

RE: How they built the Tumbler

Well, the tires of the tumbler aren't really big enough to make it go over cars (without the aid of a ramp). Or maybe it will if the body of the car is too low. At least it's convincing enogh to be more maneuverable and flexible to various terrains than the previous incarnations of the batmobile.

Yeah Tim, That's how I imagine it, too. The steering linkages extending along the control arms with universal joints.

RE: How they built the Tumbler

THIER CAM JOINTS NOT UNIVERSAL WITH A RACK AND PINION STEERING BOX...AND KEEP IN MIND THE FRONT SWING ARM MOVES UP AND DOWN LIKE THE REAR SWING ARM ON A HARLEY..THATS WHY THE TWO DAMPNERS ON EACH SIDE OF THE BEAST BACK ABOUT 4 FT FROM THE FRONT
