melting foam

Did any one ever see Monster House or Discovery channels show Big when they had a guy by the name of Cristoff on it. Cristoff used a piano wire hooked to electricity to carve threw blocks of foam it was quick and looked easy and very little mess. He could carve anything it was a treat to watch.I thought it would be a great way to carve an 89.

RE: melting foam

I usually use a hotwire for foam. Do you guys know what the best hardening resin is for coating foam? I'm wanting something that makes a plastic-like cover to make a mold.

RE: melting foam

be careful what foam you use with a hotwire. I work in Automation Alley in Metro Detroit. We have a few proto-type outfits in my office park. They use foam here and there. One of the head engineers was telline me how certain foams let off cynonide gas when hit with heat.

I'd look into this, but the guy id a professional concept car maker, so I think he knows what he's talking about.

RE: melting foam

and yet, hot knives are designed for use on styrofoam. go figure! from what i remember, and anyone can correctme if i'm wrong. While cyanic gases are eventually fatal, it's from a build-up in your system. Everyone has a diiferent tolerance level, meaning they can survive small exposures, but the cyanide doesn't leave your body and can build up. Of course I don't want to explore this, I have been around things that release cyanic gas with out proper precautions. things like Great Foam, and cold polyfoam have encapsulated cyanic gases in them. That almondy smell can kill ya.

RE: melting foam

I use a hot wire on the blue foam from time to time but I try to avoid the fumes. Mostly though I cut it with a saw or a utility knife and use a surform and drywall sanding sheets to shape it. I used to use sand paper but the drywall sheets work great.
