Making your "kit" not a kit anymore - Ideas?
So what kinds of things should be done to make your Batmobile not seem like you are driving a kit? I mean, there are lots of telltale signs when you check out a car that can indicate the quality of the build. I was visiting on Eric's message board (I know, BLASPHEMY!) and I saw this pic of a door being constructed for a '66 that is just blowing my mind!
The attention to quality and detail suprises me! When this particular car is done, I doubt highly that it will be distinguishable as a kit. So my question again is this - what can we do to '89's that make them solid and reliable, and take away from the kit effect? What would make people believe that Batman could actually use this car to fight crime (besides adding various accoutrements like machine guns and disk launchers)? Inner wheel wells liners? Professional upholstery complete with headliner for the canopy? What else? Let's brainstorm!

You were actually the next person I was going to question Don! Could we see some pics of details added to your '66's recently? I think seeing these little details, which make a HUGE difference in the final product, can help home enthusiasts better prepare for their builds with these little things in mind. How about pics of your drip rails, Don? I know all '89's could use some drip rails!!!!

Lol,
Nitro's right I dont have an 89 kickin around so can't show drip rail pics
and my 66 rails have been posted way back when on erics sight,
your better at this paste pic process than me....
A 'kit' becomes a car when it's built well, when everything works and u pull the door shut (or tuck your head in as the canopy prepares to slide..) and the latch clicks perfectly.

As Don said, it's all about attention to detail.
But to take that a step further.
It's all about how much money you're willing to throw at a project.
You could get a domed trash can, paint the top silver and put some wooden legs on the outside and paint it white with some stickers for about 50 bucks and call it R2 D2.
But there are R2 units selling for tens of thousands of dollars.
So... What's the difference? the dimensions are the same right?
Knight Rider geeks take a 1,200 dollar Trans Am, add a 100 dollar nose they bought from eBay and paint the whole car black with spray cans and call it KITT.
I put 80 grand in mine including a ten thousand dollar paint job. And I know people who's KITT's have topped over 100 grand.
You can buy a lightsaber at Wally World for 5 bucks that makes noise and lights up. Quality lightsabers sell for hundreds and do nothing more than light up and make noise.
There IS a difference!
The more you spend on a car, the more "solidly" it will be, with even more detail and it will seem "less" like a kit.
I've seen custom Corvettes with body kits on them, where you can look through the front wheel well and see clear out the other side or right through the front of the car.
Getting proper sheet metal under your 89 will set you back 5 grand easy. Without it, you're car will look like a$$ the first time it goes up on a lift. A stream-lined belly pan like a Diablo will set you back another 5K.
It's not just about 20 grand for a body and 10 grand for a chassis. That gets you an unpainted Six Flags display roller with no wheels or tires.
The 89 is totally, unbelievably, massively expensive and 85K is a good price for a well built car.
A 66 can be built for 30... but you wouldn't want it.
I've driven a 66 that someone put 125 grand into. 4 grand on the canopy trim alone!
I've said it a hundred times on this board...
"It's NOT a Knight Rider car! You can't install the front end of a Batmobile on your donor and hit the car shows! You go ALL IN or you DON'T PLAY! And it's gonna cost you a HUGE pile of money!"
None of the people I've tried to explain this to have listened, and we've got a large community of near lawn ornaments. Jack's is moving and I'm sure he's hit costs he never dreamed of for some things.
I'm sure Jack would be offended if we offered him 300 bucks for his 89 dash.
"But Jack man... That's what a Knight Rider dashboard costs! Do all the gauges work? I need the altimeter to work in my car. Does that 300 include shipping?"
Hey Kevin! What's the big deal man? You rip the body off your donor, stretch the frame one afternoon with some I-beam, drop the body on, weld in some supports, bolt in some seats and let's take her out for a spin! What's taking so long dude?
These damn cars are expensive!
I mean... a T-shirt costs me 4 bucks at Wal Mart, the screen and the ink cost you about 2 bucks a shirt. So custom shirts should cost less than 7 so you can make a buck a shirt. "Artwork doesn't count because that's just drawing, and we've already given you the design. Right?"
I think if I said that to your face at your studio, I'd be wearing a screen over my head.
The more time and money you put into a design, the more attention to detail and layering of color, the better your shirt, right?
There's the answer to your question!
That 66 door looks so cool because someone's done about 800 bucks worth of metal work on that door jamb alone.

Yep for that offer I would have to dig up the old I'm goning to beat your A$$ contract and send you 2 count them 2 copies...!!!!

Hey N8, I imaging if you have the money, none of the above is a problem. Some enterprising genius like BatGod will rig up a titanium grappling hook for you. Hey, if John Evans can make the bat gun work, BatGod can make a grappling hook that could smash though a wall.
