I wanna make some stuff....

Hey guys ,

I dont have tons of room to do this but for all I know I dont need much. I really wanna learn how to make molds and also how to use bondo or somthing like bondo but I dont know what to look for.

I want to build Batmobile customs. I can paint pretty good and been workin on cars most of my life but nothing as far as bondo and making molds. I wanted to ask you guys cause my guess is with 89 owners on this site some of you might have a suggestion or two.

I wanna know where I can find it and what brands to use for the molding stuff and the bondo or what ever works best. Thanks for any help.

Check out the build logs and tutorials in the thread here. That will get you started. Are you wanting to fabricate your own stuff and then mold it, or just start out trying to make a mold of something existing?

Ok thanks

I wanna start with makin a few replica cars just for starters then move into making my own. I was thinking also about makin custom figures.

"I wanna start with makin a few replica cars just for starters"

I think you may want to start with something a bit smaller. Maybe make a mold of some small flat object lying around the house. Or maybe make something out of foam/bondo/whatever and then make a mold of it and then a part. You can do something like that in just a day or two and learn a lot about the process.

My first build project is my bike! As per usual, I am not very far along, but I am taking measurements and ordering polyurethane sheets!

Since you say you've had some experience working on cars, you might want to get a pre-existing car, and work some fins on it or something.
You can build up your wing areas with expanding foam, metal mesh, or just about any material you can bend, or heat to shape before glassing over.
Play around with it in the beginning, and you'll learn what you need little by little.

Brin - I know you already have this stuff on the BOTB, but would you mind whipping up a little tutorial on how to make smaller items for stuff like costumes and props? I am sure everybody here would just eat up any information you could share with us!

Bobby C and Bob D have both been very generous with their information and pictures - we could always use more help though!

My buds the Bob's are more like scientists.
I'm more like the gym coach that can show you how to build stuff after a trip to Walmart.
I use the McGuyver method of props and costumes.

RE: I wanna make some stuff....

That's perfect for CLTC. The Bob's are great but they are perfectionists (Bob D., anyway) and seem to feel that if it's not done to absolute perfection with professional tools and equipment then it's not worth doing, forgetting that it's hard for beginners to start with perfection. (no offense, Bob, you know I could listen to you all day!)

From a learning standpoint, sometimes it's better to start with the basics and then move up to better processes, better tools, better materials, etc.

Batsuits out of duct tape, Batmobiles out of polystyrene foam... THAT'S what I'm talking about.

Wheels for a 1:18 Tumbler, or for something else? Either way, definitely keep us posted!

Hey Cuda....

You may want to try a local library for references into body working manuals.

They can even order you books for free, and are very willing to help you reference stuff usually!
