I was origionaly going to put a couple layers of fiberglass on these then pull the cardboard off and put more layers on the inside.

But I think it would be better to do a couple of layers of glass then do body work to make them nice and pull molds. Then make the panels from those molds. This way will cost more and take longer but it would be better.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I agree with your second idea Chilebean,  if you are anything like me, the better you can make it, the more you will want to do it.

Pulling molds and making your parts from those molds would be a great idea i think.

If you do pull molds, how many different molds do you think you will end up having to make to create 1 set for your Tumbler?

You can save a ton of time and money by doing it the way I did.  Transfer all of your patterns to 1/4" plywood.  Score the backside of all the areas where you need to bend it.  Then add fiberglass to the backside of all the bends.  That will make the panel hold its shape.  Then use filler primer on the outside and probably a little filler too.  Then sand until it is perfect.  At that point you can pull a mold.   There are around 26 pieces.  Some will need several molds.

The other idea is to transfer your pattern to metal and just bend them to shape.  I know there is one CLTC member who is doing it that way.

Looking forward to seeing your progress.

I was thinking I could save money by using fleece instead of glass on the plugs. But I will check the price of 1/4" ply vs the fleece. I had considered metal panels but with all the chamfered edges i figured it would be easier (for me) with fiberglass. With having molds, if a panel is damaged it would be easy to replace. Also my welder isn't so great with sheet metal.

The interior panels will be metal, fun plans for the interior

LOL, I can't count right now, but it looks like I have 22 panels to mold and 8-10 parts that won't have molds, flaps n' such. The roof will be molded in 2 parts.

Yeah the easy-to-replace damaged panel was what i was shooting for when i was saying you should go with molds first.    Just incase some "joker" decides to back into your car, lol.

Whow ... I like what you're doing here. Been a while since I looked in. I wonder if the same technique can be done in Rhino. Might just have a look see.

Brad.

spidey, I used the "hinge from edge" function to flatten the panels. It does create poly's you will have to delete though. And when I had it as flat as I could eye ball I used "make planer" to get them totally flat. Make planer is where the distortion comes in but it seems to have been minimal.

I'm sure Rhino has similar functions, probably labeled differently.

I figured the scale I would need for transfer and put a plane (with a wire frame texture) just behind the panels with the appropriate sized segments to represent 1'x1'.  The panels had the wire frame texture too.

How is your model going?

Shaggy has asked how I plan to address the obvious visibility issues with the tumbler. So I rendered so stuff out to illustrate my plans.

I want to put mirrors running the lenght of the outer A-pillars. Probably 2 in each.

Rear window.

All windows bigger and added a few.

Also toying with the idea of dualls all around

I've been working on a name for my car and the best I came up with was "Humbler". But since it shares many design elements with Daves Rumbler, but will be smaller, I was thinking "R2"

Any ideas?
