3 musketeers, essential welding supplies  are you grinding a bevel around the end of the pipe your welding? That helps ensure you get good penetration and that may help with the trouble your having on the thin edges of your notches. I wish I could show your stuff to my pro welder friend but he doesn't live near me nor does he have internet. I was haveing trouble with my welding and he fixed my problem just over the phone. I need to call him soon, I can see if he has any suggetions If you want.

Yeah, I've been doing alot to my 1/6 batmobile lately, The engine my wife built cranked this past weekend, im going to put it thru a heat tomorrow and do minor adjustments for her. I'll ask my dad about those tack welds (since he's certified and im not lol) It doesnt seem that they should break off that easily, when i was learning how to weld, i was putting a roll cage in a 1972 camaro (then gave the car away i might add   ), but i did more tack welds than actual complete welds. All the tack welds i did held up, tho most of them blew straight thru (too much on the amp's). But yeah, like i said, i'll ask him IF i see him this weekend.

| Thanks guys... bean...do you mean bevel the end of the tube so it lies more flush on the bottom piece? maybe grinding those thin sharp pieces down? sounds good. to bad i'm outta tube scraps...gotta get more Monday. shagg...did you use a stick for the tacking you donedid? Nice to hear the newlyweds are tinkering! it's wifey's birthday today so it's off to dinner...
...does it come in black?

| Yeah i used a stick to do all my tack welds, at the time (well now that i think of it, even to today) i couldn't weld a roll cage adequately, had to let my dad do all that, but i did do all the beveling, measuring, cutting and tack welds. my dad just finished the welds on around for me . Here are some pics of that car and roll cage (pointless i know, i wish i had some close ups of the welds themselves)

Cool pics! will continue practicing with the stick...I'm finding that the right electrodes are the key to strong bonds. When i use 6013 sticks, the tacks are easy to crack or break. When I use 6011, at the same amperage, the tack is stronger as is the weld. 6011's arent pretty and cause lots of spatter, but the welds are strong.

| I have own a MIG welder for about four years now and use it all the time. Whenever I come across a bad weld where I don't have enough penetration I check my ground first. 95% of the time it's due to the clamp being dirty and not making good contact or a shaty outlet. Try to make sure the ground is good and it will help your welding dramatically.

thanks link...i will check that out. there were a couple of incidents where I wasn't getting an arc after a few strikes...reseting my grounding clamp fixed that.
aggressively looking for a well priced Hobart H187
...does it come in black?

| Is there other reasons the might hold you back from getting a TIG besides for maybe money? Yeah is harder then MIG but it is a lot more cleaner and better quality.
