Man, I love the internet! This is a photo of The Car I NEVER thought I'd see...it's a picture of the #1(sheetmetal) CAR sitting on the back lot at Universal. Probably '79 or '80 before it was auctioned off. This is a pretty amazing find! -Matt

lincolnmrk66 -- Wasn't there a small British website that showed a few different replicas of The Car that people had built over the years? It even had a scan of a classified ad for one of them. I seem to recall most were built on Fords. That car you posted with what appears to be a UK license plate...it MAY have been one of them, but I seem to remember the car it most closely resembled had different headlight areas, plus I don't recall it having those front turn signals. I mean, the car on this site I am thinking of was more like the car in the movie.
I remember seeing those two B&W photos of the Lincoln Mark III donor car, the one with the masking tape on it and the other after the steel fabrication had started. But I think there's a third photo somewhere of somebody actually working ON the car, maybe Barris.
The replica you posted photos of, in the post with the screengrab from Futurama, it looks unfinished. Appears to be a Lincoln Mark III under there?
Thanks,
Ryan Thompson
PS -- I joined this board mainly because of this thread --- I LOVE this vehicle.

Thanks for the interest, Rage! I remember the site you are talking about, however it won't let you access THE CAR section. I do have the photos from that site saved on my other computer, and will retrieve them at a later date. I believe the car in the classified ad is the same car in the Bromley, UK car show photo. http://www.superjohn.f9.co.uk/cars.htm I also have several build photos of THE CAR, but am hesitant to post them without the proper permission. If I get the go ahead, I will post them. The Car build with the Futurama photo is indeed a Lincoln Mark lll. I can't remember exactly where that car was (possibly Indiana), but it was being sold on eBay for $6000. Way to much $$ IMO. I offered him $2000, but he didn't want to let it go for that. I completely understand, and respect the amount of work he put in, but to be a more accurate replica, it needed a lot of correction. As of now, my build is on hold because of the coming holidays and the usual harsh Northeast Winter I only wish I had a larger garage!! -Matt

Oh yes, I remember how I found it the first time now: I'd been looking for images/data on John Dodd's 'Beast', that car he built with the Rolls-Royce airplane engine.
I think there were two different classified ads on the site. One of the two replicas had a manual transmission, if my memory is correct. That one build photo showing the front of the Car with the weld lines, I think that might have been on the site, too. Do the other build photos you have give good insight about how it was done?..

Its interesting but I don't care much for that replica, the sides are too high.

I have a question I've been meaning to ask. I was wondering, how did they open the doors of the car used in the film? The door handles are gone.

Ah, I figured it'd be a keyless thing. As a side effect, does that make the vehicle harder to steal?
BTW, I looked at your Photobucket, on a hunch the forementioned Car build photos would be there. They were! I was surprised when I saw the metal scaffolding/frame built around the existing vehicle. I didn't know it would be that simple. Really interesting. The welding on the metal sheets is kinda odd looking -- from a distance it looks like rivets. Is that just the way the photos make it appear?
Thanks,
Ryan

Sounds good, Ryan...if you happened to make copies of them, please keep them to yourself. I got these photos from a friend of George Barris and do not know if they want them tossed about the internet. It is a very interesting build...I always knew they built it over the Mark III, but did not know the extent of it until I saw the photos for myself....very cool!! -Matt
