It's a fabric called tulle. They use it for weddings and stuff. You can pick it up at fabrics stores or wedding stores or whever. it's pretty common. I just had some white on hand, so I painted it, but you can get it in black. That would save some time. Gluing it in the headrest is the hard part. Tweezers and patience

This looks excellent! Where the heck were you when I had to build/ modify these for Toyfair at Mattel? I had the shop guys build some the early "first shot" models and ugh...they turned out horrible. I would have signed you up as a vendor asap.
Now I'm starting to see how it SHOULD have turned out!

Thanks Dave, your input means a LOT. I wish I was around back then! Being in manufacturing I'm familiar with all of the sprues and parting lines and I know that to make things cost effective you sometimes have to compromise on the ideal design. It's a sweet car and as soon as I get it done, I'm going to build a diorama to place it in. Maybe an Axis chemicals scene or just an industrial scene. I'll PM ya when I get the project wrapped up.

Matt,
You would have loved to see the "high end" versions we built for the sales guys to try to sell into Sharper Image, Comic shops, etc. Basically we got early models (sometimes resin) and built these really complex dioramas. Hot Wheels has LOTS of money and talent so I think we came up with about 5 or 6 scenarios:
Bruce Wayne working on the Batmobile in the batcave with computers hooked up. Engine was out and cowl displays were on.
Repainted as the Returns car with snow and Batman figure.
Battle damage version (MUCH nicer than that monstrosity they eventually did)
Diorama in back alley with shields half-way up. Same car but extra "floating" parts.
Batmobile on turntable display like in batcave. This would have been a beautiful round display box.
The one I wanted to do was "behind the scenes" with 1/18 scale shop guys building the batmobile prop with the front cowl off and a Chevy engine in there. WB almost flipped when I suggested that one!

Dave, those would have been amazing to see! I have built a lot of buildings in 1:87, so I will have to scale up a bit for the diorama, but I'm looking forward to it!
On another note, all of those pics of the original car came from you right? I saved a bunch off of the forum a long time ago and I thought they were the ones you took when you were looking at WB and working on the 1:18.

you could add a wiper system for a returns version, also some scoring to the afterburner from the heat produced. Check out the Gordon Onstar ad for an alternate Turntable diarama. Orrrrrr, if you have the balls and the modding skill you could try a breakaway missle version. Any chance of a 1:18 or 1:22.5 or whatever the size is Dave, missle returns car in Mattel's future.
Hell, maybe if we could pin down the right money guy, a true 1:18 Returns 2 pack.
how much to modd mine, not my signed version sadly.

Okay, remember, everyone is always saying "more pictures, more pictures". Well, I like to take pics. Too bad it's only a model huh? Anyway Here's night 3 of this project:
GUNS

This looks really cool and isn;t that tough. Take a very small drill bit in a pin vise and drill out the ends of the gun barrels. I drilled in a bit and then used an xacto knife to center the hole and make it a bit bigger. I then tried to remove the parting lines .
The guns were interesting to do. I wanted to leave the "chrome" visaable in spots to get a metallic reflection. Anyway first I painted the guns with black enamel to get a dark base. (I thinned it a bit). I was careful on the barrel to only paint the outside and not get any paint in the holes, so they would still be silver. Here's what that looked like:
Here's the finished gun. I see in the pics that I missed a @#$% parting line. I suppose I'll go back and redo it, but I don;t have the energy tonight.
Here's a couple more:
On the gun doors I added the four screw heads by lightly touching a fine wire in paint and then very carefully touching it on the car. Small detail, but it adds a lot.

On to the back. I sanded and cleaned up the exhaust casting.
I came up with a method of applying a black/gray acylic paint mixture to the chrome parts in back that makes them darker and a little splotchy and yet still retians the shine. I really like how the pipes came out.
