Shown here in the UK on BBC2 and various satelite and cable channels and in the states on BBC AMERICA. TOP GEAR presenter Richard "Hamster" Hammond last week was attempting an Unofficial UK land speed record attempt, when the Jet engine powered car he was driving crashed at nearly 300MPH. He was air-lifted to Leeds hospital by Air Ambulance within 30 minutes of the crash. All medical consultants have said that this rapid response saved his life.
In public donation support of Richard, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance charity appeal has so far raised over a quarter of a million dollars in just five days, with one individual donating over $75,000 (suspected to be his co-presenting friend Jeremy Clarkson.)
He sustained a "significant Brain Injury" due to the car barrel-rolling and coming to a halt upside-down after a suspected Tire blowout. In four days he went from doctors wondering if he would survive through the first night, to walking to the toilet in the first 48 hrs, sitting up in bed and having converstions with his co-presenters, and being put on a general medical ward.
Experts say he must have felt forces on his brain in the crash of about 100g. Unfortunatly in all this, the Emmy award winning show has faced criticism for dangerous car "stunts" to gain viewers. Senior Executives at the BBC has considered cancelling the show altogether in a knee-jerk reaction to the accident. Jeremy Clarkson and fellow presenter James May have made it their mission that Richard has a show to return to after his recovery.
James May was originally sheduled to drive the car, however due to other filming commitments Richard Hammond asked to take on the asignment.
