Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

Let's face it, this is the batmobile. You can't just put the groceries in the trunk and hit the 'DOOR LOCK' button. After that, you walk away, come back later, put your key in the door and then into the ignition.

This doesn't have doors.

Sure, of all the custom ideas we could think of, we can integrate a way to lock the canopy. Maybe it's a keyless entry system wired to a trunk release which controls the canopy on pnumatic pistons. Maybe you put a little key-hole on the side of the car to mechanically lock it. Maybe you don't lock it at all.

BUT WHAT IF IT'S STOLEN!?

I had a thought today while walking to the bathroom at work, for some reason. That's usually when I get my best ideas.

Dramatic pause for another overdrawn lead-in.

It's pretty obvious how remote starters work. When you get right down to it, you push a button on a radio transmitter that sends a signal to a radio receiver tuned to the same frequency. This receiver bridges the electrical connection between the ignition and the starter. You hit the button, the car starts.

But this is the Batmobile we're talking about, not a damn minivan.

In more and more frequency today, companies are producing a variety of biometrics devices for a variety of uses. USB fingerprint scanners for your computer, a lock for your fridge, some cars even have biometrics door locks. My proposition is a biometrics fingerprint scanner in the dash, bridging the connection between the ignition and the starter, only, without the ignition. You get in the batmobile, you put your thumb on a blue glass plate (stylishly integrated into the dashboard), and the car starts. This insures that even if you can't lock the canopy (which I'm sure you would do anyway), no one can start your batmobile without your thumb. Not only is this practical, it would look damn cool.

So how is it done? By God, Ryan, that must cost thousands.

Well, not necessarily. If you can't find a premade biometrics car starter (I sure as hell can't), anyone with enough gumption can make their own. If I can't find one by the time I get to that point, I'm going to tackle a whole 'nother animal. You know that monitor in the batmobile, on the right side above the passenger seat? Wouldn't that be cool if it were real? Well, using the same simplified computer technology that's in laptops and Thin Clients, someone with a drill and a power converter could put a system right into the car. In mine, it would be basic at first. A laptop set far into the dash, the only protrusions being a trackball in the center console and a 14" (or smaller) LCD flat panel like in the movie batmobile (though I suppose it's more of a CRT television..). The system boots up, prompts for a fingerprint password (USB scanner, like this)and then goes through a simple startup process (the PC, not the car). Through a simple program (I work for a computer company -- something like this wouldn't be hard to write by some of the people we do business with), the scanner, after recognizing the print, sends a signal to the starter, starting the engine. Eventually, other programs could be integrated into the on-board computer to measure certain processes within the car. Like you'd see on a normal car, but with a GUI.

It's muddy as hell, but it's a thought. As time goes on, it'll get more refined. But hey, that's why we're all here, right? To share ideas about the batmobile.

Good lord do I type a lot.

Ryan, like I said before, baby steps. But I love the enthusiasm. Jack

Sorry, got a little excited.

IT'S SO COOL THOUGH, and seems pretty simple.

Heh, if I had my own emoticon it would probably be

RE: Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

Seems like a good idea.
Except the driver having to lean over to the passenger side panel to start the car.

How'bout carrying a batwing lock that fits on the center of the steering wheel which you can't steer without the lock in place

RE: Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

for my batmobile, to start it u first have to have the right series of switchs flip in the right order, then one of the cylinders on my working bat belt will work as a key for manual start, im also wroking on having the cylinder remotely open the canopy and start the car, why have the cylinder work as a key if it can remote start. im also working on having the palm comptuer in the bat belt link up to the comptuer in the batmobile.

the downfall of ur finger print scaner it makes it a bit easyer for people to steal ur batmobile, a firend of mien who shall not be name but did steal cars for awhile was reading a artical that some cars comming out would have a fingerprint scaner, he told me if some guy wanted ur car bad enough he just chop off ur finger, or if he was smart, he just find a soda can u threw away get ur fingerprint off that, he went onto expline how take the fingerpring form a comptuer scan to somethign u can slip over ur finger.

i will have a bigger monitor in my batmobile, the comptuer is gonna dispaly a voice activated alfred cgi head that i can give commands 2, but i can manualy input information, there is a back up track ball but i wont need it, how u ask, easy touch screen montitors, the monitor in the consual is a reg montor that will dispaly the screen 2, but the touch screen flips down form the canopy contorls.

RE: Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

If someone is going to "just chop off your finger", then why wouldn't they "just take your keys" now??

It's fun to think about all this stuff, I do the same thing, but I don't think people appreciate how much goes into just putting together a basic car. I've seen all the work Jack had done over the last 8 months or so, plus about 2 years before we met. It's a major project. Actually that's an understatement. It's more like a bunch of major projects.

Isn't the project taking long for Jack b/c he's old and fraile and likes to swing dance as you suggested last time?

Well, that's a good point...

RE: Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

yea but wouldent u rather they just take ur keys then chop off ur finger? with a tracking system in it it will be easy to find if they store it somewhere.

ill agree a lot of people dont know how much work goes into it. and the more advanced u want it the harder it will get. even when u start with a pre fab body theres lots of work. but i figure its better they get an idea of what they want, that way they can get an idea of the cost and how to go about it insted of jumping right into it.

Just get OnStar. No worries.

RE: Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

What I mean about the "finger" is that all they have to do now is just take our keys... but they don't. So why, if we swithced it to a finger would they take our finger?

You know- if you get enough Wendy's chili, you might even have a 'spare finger' er a key!

Just do it Mr.Bean's way.

Take the steering wheel out and put it in your brief case.

RE: Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

what im saying is if someone wanted to steal it that bad ("if some guy wanted ur car bad enough he just chop off ur finger,") then ur out a figner insted of keys, i know the last thing i want to hear if i was to get car jacked and had a finger print scanner would be "give me ur keys". but as i was also saying all they really need is ur fingerprint which they can get off a can of soda, and they could grab ur car at anytime.

RE: Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

I get what your saying, more of a "what if?" and that makes sense, but I don't really think it would be a concern of mine becasue if you get carjacked it's probably already startee and if it's not the guy won't even know he needs your finger...

RE: Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

yea its kinda like a waht if, but not even that important, whos really gonna try and car jack the batmobile, unless ur really in that bad of a neighber hood. where ever u park its gonna attrack lots of attention, and if they cant even get the canopy open they not even gonna be able to start it. it was just the genral thought that firngerprint scaners on any car does not mkae it safer, once a person has a copy of ur finger print they can steal ur car at any point, while a key if they dont have it they still gonna have to hotwire it. or jimmy the ingtion switch. and if ur dressed as batman while driving u would have to take ur gloves off each time u want to start the car.

but yea kinda like a waht if but not that important, just a general thought. cuz as i siad, whos gonna hijack a batmobile if theres a a crowed watching it.

Did someone say "Jack"? Hijack, car jack. Sorry I thought you meant me.

RE: Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

Actually, if someone were to use a fingerprint from the ever-popular soda can example, it'd be a mirror image of the print and wouldn't work. They'd need to go the extra step of lifting the print, and then use it. In a fast-paced carjacking, I doubt a thief would have the presence of mind to think of this.

RE: Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

Ever been to Asian countries?
Thieves cut the finger off the passengers in a crowded subway to steal a ring.

So cutting off someone's finger to steal one of a kind car is not far out there.

RE: Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

Oh man, what have I done.

No one's cutting off any fingers here. This is a custom batmobile you (probably) built in your back yard, not a government jet.

RE: Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

Try it the old batman comic way.

The batmobile had a radio with 6 buttons. I believe the buttons were labelled 'A','M','N','T','B','A'.

And joker stole the car but couldn't start it b/c there was no start button.
Then batman after cathing joker showed him how to start the car by pressing 'B-A-T-M-A-N'

No one can crack that!

RE: Keys? Where we're going, we don't need.. keys.

EXCELLENT! That is how I will do it. :) In all seriousness, I do not think anybody would be dumb enough to steal the Batmobile. Most stolen cars go to a chop shop. What could you possibly do to the Batmobile to make it unrecgnizable? And if they were stealing it based upon its percieved value, then they would need a fence to move the merch once it is stolen. There is probably not a fence in the world that could sell the car without attracting attention. Of course, if they had a private collector all lined up already who knew he was getting a "hot" Batmobile and did not plan on ever taking it out of his show car garage....

With what Justin said, I think we can all learn something from this: keep your eye on Jay Leno.
