Tumbler to possibly be the pace car for June 19 Nextel Cup

Got this from the Detroit Free Press:

New movie to sponsor MIS race; Batmobile might be pace car

Can the Batmobile hang with NASCAR Nextel Cup stock cars?

Here's the new model of the Batmobile from "Batman Begins."
Race fans might find out at Michigan International Speedway in June. The June 19 Nextel Cup race will be named the Batman Begins 400 for the Warner Bros. movie that will be released that weekend. The race was called the DHL 400 last year.

"I believe this is the first time a major movie has been the sponsor of a NASCAR Cup race," said MIS president Brett Shelton. "It's tremendous for the sport, and I think it's going to be a lot of fun for fans."

So MIS has the name down, but it's not clear yet whether the Batmobile -- or Christian Bale, who plays Bruce Wayne and Batman in the film -- will be on hand.

Word is that the Batmobile will pace the field of Chevrolets, Fords and Dodges.

Shelton would not say if the Batmobile would be seen on the giant two-mile MIS oval.

"I can't confirm or deny it will be on the track," said Shelton, a longtime Batman fan. "But that's the rumor. If it shows up, I think it would be very cool."

Having a race named after a Batman movie was exciting enough, said Shelton, "but if the Batmobile is the pace car, the crowd is in for a big time."

"Batman Begins" is the fifth movie based on the popular comic book hero in recent years, and Bale, a Welsh actor whose credits include "American Psycho," "Reign of Fire" and "Shaft," is the fourth actor to play the role in those films.

Shelton thinks Bale also might be at MIS for the race.

"We are in the middle of discussions regarding that," said Shelton. "Not sure, but look to the west for a sign in the sky."

This would be the coolest promotion ever. I'd love to see that thang do a couple of laps on it's own, just to see what it's capable of.

The car would have to do over a hundred to stay in line, I really don't think it could sustain those speeds for any given legnth of time.

The pace car goes over 100 mph?

Sadly the 89 would fall apart but I'd bet The Tumbler could do it.

You think it would fall apart aerodynamically?

My only doubts about the Tumbler's performance come from the video clip of it taking a hard corner and the inside front wheel came off the ground.

RE: Tumbler to possibly be the pace car for June 19 Nextel Cup

Why the doubts?

I mean the car to be used in the cup does not have to be the same one used in the movie. It can easily be equipped with necessary engine and parts for whatever the ocassion requires.

Are you asking me?

That is correct. Lets not forget that Trix is making a Tumbler. My only doubt is because they normally use a pace car to promote commercial sales of the car. So, maybe we will be able to go by a Tumbler at our local Chevy dealer. Yeah Right!

Well, the car is gonna have to perform. It's role as pace car has been confirmed in an official press release.

Race fans will have a front-row seat for a one-of-a-kind celebration of the film's launch when the Batmobile from the film leads the pack of 43 race cars off of pit road to start the battle for the checkered flag.

Too cool.

I'm seeing for the first time how the two front wheel are mounted only on one side.

Dang, isn't it going to be hassle to align those things?
Especially the way it lands on the front wheels after jumping in the trailer.

Yeah, I do. The difference is that the spindles (whatever they are called, Jack?) point inwards instead of outwards. Definately a unique desing as far as I know.

RE: Tumbler to possibly be the pace car for June 19 Nextel Cup

Are there any cars with same front wheel mounted(?) design like the tumbler?
I'd love to know how practial such design is or what benefit it has over conventional design.

Interesting really. Who would have thought we be discussing tumbler in keaton batmobile site.

Tim,
Do you have that flash clip of the tumbler hitting the cave after jumping?
I know you posted on another thread but couldn't find it.

I'd like to see again the impact on the front wheels.

Actually the car isn't going to have to perform that much. The pace car never really gets much above 60 or so if that. Even the 89 could do that without many problems. I actually saw an 89 go around about a quarter of Lowes Motor Speedway once. It was pretty surreal.

If there is one thing I don't like about tumbler is the exposed front tires.

How can it function as an offensive/defensive vehicle when the there is no fender to protect the vehicle.

A direct collison or side collision would make the tires rip to shreds and make the vehicle useless.

It's much to speculate without seeing the movie yet but someone needs to cover those tires up.

RE: Tumbler to possibly be the pace car for June 19 Nextel Cup

Ok so if you watch that tumbler scene its a cut away. The first scene is shot on a track and the following is really just maybe a jump over the hill. If I had to bet on it they took several takes of the second shot. From the way it looks the suspension probly couldnt handle much. The cars weight kinda scares me, and that car doesnt even have a real interior. Hmmm... Dont know what to think other than this car is definately a hybridized Ferrari/Bradly. Sad but not really workable. Unless you want a car you constantly have to maintain, something the military wouldnt mind. Like I said Im building a car worthy of batmobile.
