Bulletproof shielding
If I want to get my car bullet proofed, what materials do I need?

First off, that would cost HUGE amounts of green. Secondly, you have to register your car as thusly. Third, it is very VERY heavy (even the top of the line, cutting edge bullet proof fiberglass kevlar is still wicked heavy) which would require that you get a bigger buffer engine, heavy duty shocks/struts or leaf springs, and a higher grade tire and wheels that can support all the additional wieght. -And this is assuming your car's frame is already strong enough to support the extra wieght. -All in all, not worth it.
But if you want to go cheap-o style:
Tear off your inner door pannels (the plastic part) and slap some 1/4" or 1/2" steel pannels in there. This will block small arms, but not much more, and you're still likely to take a shot through the glass. -And bullet proof glass is the heaviest part.
But if you want to go for it I can show you the way.

If it was attack mechanism I'd understand but this is for purely protection.

When decommissioned Humvees are sold from the government to the public sector, they are stripped of ALL bulletproof shielding. I do not know the laws exactly, but I imagine it has to be illegal or something. I am not sure.
As far as making a car bulletproof, I never saw combat in service, so I never had to do this to any of my vehicles. However, my sister just got deployed to Iraq and she drives a Hummer in a convoy. They do exactly what was just recommended. They bolt on any scraps of thick steel they can find, to any part of the vehicle that will support it. They even do this to the bottom of the vehicle to deter road bombs. I am sure if there were a lighter of better way, they would be doing it - as their lives depend on it. We wore a very lightweight type body armor when we trained, but it would only block VERY small arms fire. If someone points a 30 cal round at you, forget about it.

She has been stationed in Germany since right after I got out of the Army. She was just deployed to Iraq. She can always use more prayers. :) She is my younger sister, and I always worry about her.
