  Question about the canopy
 From: YJH | Posted: 8/22/2004 10:08:23 PM |

Question about the canopy

Does anyone know how the canopy opens from outside?
I've seen few cockpit shots that show some hanging belt that could be used to slide the canopy in and out.
But how does one open the canopy from outside?

The movie just shows it as it being automatic.
Also the onstar commercial shows some magic handle that appear out of the blue.

But in real life, how?

RE: Question about the canopy

Ever seen those cars that have an automatic opening trunk? My girlfriend's Cavalier is that way. Press the TRUNK button and it pops open. You can pay a hundred bucks and have a similar mechanism put in a tricked out little Eclipse or something. Same basic concept for the Canopy. The only modification I would recommend is in addition to popping it open, a pneumatic piston could push it the entire way open when the latch releases. A little reverse air pressure when you get in, and BAM, the thing would close again, securing the latch until you either press the remote button or press a button inside the cockpit. Easy. The harder part is fabricating the 3 rail system that the canopy would slide open on... (They have a few good pics of this on the TRIX website)

RE: Question about the canopy

i dont think the harder part is fabricationg the rail system, if ur building a batmobile thats the easy part, lol.

RE: Question about the canopy

lol. True. The difficulty level of the car as a whole is much higher.

RE: Question about the canopy

Thanks for your input guys.

But my original question was how do those movie batmobiles and replicas open?
I don't know the terms but I know of the metal bar(?) that goes in the center at the top of the canopy for sliding in and out.
And as mentioned, I have seen those belt clip that is hanging off of the canopy from inside.

My question was how is it designed to open from outside?

I saw the batmobile at Petersen's but couldn't get close enough to check.
It was closed but I did notice that there was still a big gap from the ftont part of the canopy and the hood of the car.

RE: Question about the canopy

i dont know for sure but if im right that bar u see is a pneumatic piston. it pushes the canopy open. this is the only logic i see to that bar becuase its not needed for support. as i siad above, if its closed, they could have had a remote switch to open it. and close it

RE: Question about the canopy

Yes, it is a pneumatic piston. It was placed in that position on some of the cars, but others you will see the piston(s) repositioned for easier access. Regardless of its position, it is still a remotely activated pneumatic, 2 way piston.

RE: Question about the canopy

A hidden switch on the driver’s underside, just below the bonnet latchment can access the canopy. There is also a cannon plug located next to the switch. A laptop computer can access the engine start system to prevent unauthorized use of the vehicle. The canopy switch on the inside of the vehicle is located on the drivers left side APU “aircraft” control panel.

RE: Question about the canopy

Do you guys have the pics of the switch from both inside and outside the car?

Thanks

RE: Question about the canopy

If you look through the pictures that are in the batmobile gallery you can find them all.
