I have lit the TIM signal! No, not YOU, Tim....
Ok, so I am wondering what happened to Tim... Not the Tim we all know and love (Tim Miller) and not the ever helpful Tim Wylie who provides us with nicely packaged 3D files to download... I am talking about TIM, the one we inducted into the Batmobile Replica Hall of Fame? You know, the FIRST and ONLY inductee? He posted his contact info, and lots of GREAT pics of his car. I wanted to talk to him about how he built it and lots of the details but he seems quite elusive. Are you out there, Tim??? I am starting my polystyrene / plywood buck soon. It is intentionally not going to be accurate. It is going to be more like Tim's, only a little bigger.

RE: I have lit the TIM signal! No, not YOU, Tim....
Well, I am about to start my scratch built car (AGAIN. the first one was a complete bust) and I am planning on sculpting the car using the following technique:
a) set up plywood formers to develope a basic shape
b) fill all the gaps with polystyrene foam
c) lay a layer of resin over the top and smooth and sculpt the basic lines
d) add the advanced flares, scoops and intake to the basic design
e) lay a final layer of resin and SAND LIKE CRAZY
f) lay multiple layers of fiberglass mat and resin for the body shell
g) flip car over and pull out original plywood, polystyrene and resin from the new body
h) add structural reinforcement, mount on a donor, and do all the detail work
I was hoping you could share more about how YOU did your car and whatnot. What problems did you run into? Did you make a plywood former template? Did you sculpt directly on the chassis of the car and leave some of the formers inside the body (Popular Mechanics promotes this method) I would love to get a good conversation going about this!

RE: I have lit the TIM signal! No, not YOU, Tim....
no, none of the above. the body of the donor car was removed. I use a small model to get basic size and shapes, cut out plastic panels, then from them cut out steel panels, welded them together then glassed it all and sanded sanded sanded, I have changing the front of the car and the rear fenders to a better match ben waiting for it to warm up so i can pull it out to sand and finish it.

Do you not want to use the plug-mold-part technique?
By the way, do not use Polyester Resin on Polystyrene foam, it will melt it away. You can use the more expensive Epoxy resin though. However, if you use Epoxy resin you cannot use chop mat.
I know, you didn't mean me...

Hey Tim Miller, if you lay a thin layer of regular drywall plaster over the polystyrene buck, you get around the solvency issues. Is is kinda like cheating, because you are able to use the HELLA cheap polystyrene, which is 1/5 the cost of polyurethane foam. The regular drywall plaster is easy to work with, too. And cheap. It sands well, aslo.

RE: I have lit the TIM signal! No, not YOU, Tim....
I'm using Kilz as a barrier instead of drywall mud. I will cover the foam with Kilz and then do all of the detail work with Bondo. I thought about using drywall mud instead of Bondo since it is easier to sand but I was afraid it would be too prone to cracking.

I saw a guy do a Lambo replica with the drywall mud, which is where I got the idea from. It seemed to work well for him. :)

I saw a guy do a custom car he called a Meerkat. I'll post a link if I can find it again.
