  Building the Batmobile.

Building the Batmobile.

I love this car so much. I have debated trying to build my own. I have a few questions. When the patent ends, will I be able to go to TRIX or anyone else and have a kit made? If not will I be able to build my own without having the WB breathing down my neck? I know a little on what it takes to put one of these things together, but if someone could post any links of tutorials or any one that has made one and documented it, that would be great. Any links would be appreciated.

Thanks

RE: Building the Batmobile.

i doubt u will be able to go to trix for they have a contract, now soon as the patent ends im sure a lot of kits will start popping up. weather u buy a kit or build ur own, WB will still keep an eye out on you, its still part of there franchies and if u do something with it that they feel hurts the franchise they can come after you. so far the only 2 sites i know of that has people documenting there work on the build is mine ( www.unlimiteddimension.net ) just go to the project bat area, the other is http://www.k-tune.com/k-chin/right.html hes building a shell to fit over an existing car without modfication to its chassis unlike mine.
i doubt you will find any real tutorial on building a batmobile, but a little tip if u wnat to go a cheap route, go like the 2 link i showed u and build a shell around a car, if not, excpet to spend a lot more, i estmated mine costing 35,000.00 to 40,000.00 to build mine, which has more features then a nomral prop car would but i also have family that can help with welding and engine work so i wont have to pay someone to do that work.

RE: Building the Batmobile.

I would aslso like to build an '89 replica someday, but I'm not too sure you won't have any trouble from WB even after the patent supposedly expires if you publicly display the car. If you go on the 1966 Batmobile website, you'll read that even George Barris has to get WB's permission when displaying the Batmobile; even though George owns the car, he doesn't own the rights to it, and it's been over 30 years since the car was first built. I suggest that you ask a person that fequents that site who goes by the name "Gdog", he seems to be the most knowledgable on that subject.

RE: Building the Batmobile.

theres alwasy a chacne u are gonna catch heat form wb, if im right the main reason barris has to get permission is he uses the name "batman" and the 66 logo, i think sony may have purches some of the 66 items. but if wb watned they could go after people for dressing up as batman. but i know a lot of people who owns 66 replicas, that puts them on public disply, russ martin uses his in his parades he does. but one things for sure, if ur worryed about the heat, a 89 batmobile is not for you. cuz no matter how much time goes pass, theres always gonna be heat on any person who uses the car.

RE: Building the Batmobile.

aslo donovan, its a little harder for wb to attack someone outside the us, but there are laws that allows them 2,

RE: Building the Batmobile.

The reason Barris has to get permission to display the car is because a) he was displaying the #1 car for money, which was co-owned by Barris. There were alot of contract stipulations that prevented Barris from doing very much, and he got a lot of heat from WB. Eventually, he stopped touring the original #1, and has toured multiple replicas since, CLAIMING they are the #1. The tell tale giveaway is that only the #1 and #5 cars were steel, the rest were fiberglass. These alleged "#1" cars are all fiberglass that he shows! and b) Like sg1star said, he uses the door bats and the term "Batmobile", that is currently and will always be copyrighted. For awhile, Barris had modified the door bats to look completely different (and much cheesier) than the original copyrighted versions.

WB will still turn up the heat on those who build replica cars, but will have little recourse unless the owners slip up and do something stupid (like endorsing products or events as a "Batmobile"). Remember, when the #5 car was created by a fan and TOURED AT THE SAME TIME BARRIS WAS TOURING HIS CARS, Barris could not do anything but issue a cease and desist order. He never even came close to confiscating that car!

Most '66 owners do in fact tour their cars and alot of them make money off them. Not a LOT of money, but a couple bucks for photo opps and parades and stuff like that. In fact, I spent all of yesterday with Nate Truman, who owns a very nice '66 replica. (For pictures and the full scoop, follow this link: http://www.thebatcave.8k.com/nate_truman.htm )

Follow that link and you will see Nate's car, as well as lots of pics of me in it. :) Tons of fun.

I know several guys that are currently preparing for the upcoming patent lapse, and will be offering kits for similar prices to the '66. The only reason they are not on my site yet is because right now, it IS still illegal to sell them. But not after November (remember, lots of people are OPENLY selling '66 Anti-Crime Roadsters). And no, TRIX is not one of them. They are under strict contract and the watchful eye of big brother Warner, and they will not soon go the way of Jay Ohrberg (sp?).

RE: Building the Batmobile.

its just like modifyin a car- every1 takes moulds of the original front mounts or sides and the actual company that makes them cant do nothin- so long as the copier calls them copies and doesnt stamp that companys logo on it(hint veilside). in terms of makin a kit to put on your car your talkin major work...first you gotta find a car long enough, which cockpit is further back, is wider..differential and axle and drive/shaft gear that can take the wider and bigger tyres, because, in honesty looking at the net over this car a guy made a kit for a chevy that is just big enough to fit it- but without it being the real dramatically cool dimensions of the 1989 batmobile it just plain sucked...i reckon if u create it yourself sweet.

RE: Building the Batmobile.

nick,
the trick to buidling a 1:1 replica is not finding a car that is long enough, the trick is chooseigng a car no matter if its shorter and choping the frame and extending it, the cockpit can be moved back easly. u just rebuild it. most people build kits to fit on existing cars becasue its cheaper, me, my batmobile will be 1:1 my bro in law is doing the extending of the frame for me.

RE: Building the Batmobile.

Yup. As long as you are left with a wheelbase that is about 141", you should be fine. Then re-rig the whole thing with Corvette suspension parts, and ZOOM. :)

RE: Building the Batmobile.

For info on the car, you are in the right place. The people in this forum know what they are talking about. Also, check out www.thebatcave.8k.com . LOTS more info will suddenly appear on the site after November, so stay tuned. As for costumes, the Brotherhood of the Bat is the place to go for that!

RE: Building the Batmobile.

i am thinking bout building one....what would you start with as a base...i was thinking a 84-89 corvette(pre-airbags) and go from there, what would you need to get it street legal? I would power it with a LS1 crate motor, supercharged!stretch the vette frame?...give me some tips! also a few months ago WB was selling a movie car,the price wasn't too bad if I remember right. does anyoneknow who bought it or what board or where they post?or is it still for sale, i think i saw the whole page ad in the dupont registry.thanks for the help!

RE: Building the Batmobile.

Hey guys! Yeah, the old site got hacked and had to be scrapped because of some trouble with a couple of guys in the Bat-community who were out to cause trouble. The NEW URL is www.thebatcave8k.com (thanks Tim!). Check it out and bookmark the new site! More information is coming soon!

RE: Building the Batmobile.

The #2 Car was built on a stretched '73 Chevy Impala frame. I think the '71-'74 Impala's all used the same frame. I'm not sure if the other movie cars were built on Impala frames or not.

That said, the movie cars are just that, "movie cars". They're meant to look good on film, but in reality they're kind of shoddy. Not that the Impal frame is a bad way to go, just don't base too much on what the originals used (I know you didn't ask about what the movie cars used.. )

RE: Building the Batmobile.

i wouldent worry about what to start wtih the base, but it does matter what kind of replica you want to build, there some who build smaller replicas that are modfyed shoorter and less wide so it will just slide right onto a reg car frame, then others like me who has to build it 1:1 who needs to chop up a frame and modfie it, if u know how to weld and/or got the money then a 1:1 works nice, if u dont i suggest goign wtih a shell that just slides over a reg car. making it street legal is not all to hard, it really depends on the method u go about it, the way im going about it is costing a arm and leg because im mkaing everything moterized. but basicly the main things u need to mkae it street legal is
1: headlights (i choose flip up headlights)
2: hight from ground (check ur state for this one, some people just build the car higher up off the ground, im gonna use hydrolics to rase the car and sliding panels on the outside to still give it a apperane of poportions.
3: side view mirrors and rare view mirrors (check ur state agian some states done require both,)
4: working wind sheild wipers (i think that goes wtihout saying)
5:licnes plate, some states reqwuire front and back,
6: if u want the flame check state regulations and i suggest having a shop isntall that part if u dont know what ur doing

i do suggest u really get a good idea of the size of the car by taking 5 4x8 sheets of wood cutting them to 4x7 and then lineing them all up, the 1:1 cars are big and diffcutly to drie sometimes on the road, u only have around a foot clearance on each side, some people find that a little nurve recking, so u may decided u will want to go wtih the smaller body replica, if not then i would suggest putting cammers on the outside of the body that way u will have better alighment when dirving and less liklky to get into a accdent.

RE: Building the Batmobile.

You know, I just found this site and I can't believe that people really do build this car. I currently am building a replica of KITT from Knight Rider, since I always wanted to, but in the back of my mind I've also always wanted to build a 1:1 scale of the 89 Batmobile, which I think is the baddest car ever to hit the screen, even over KITT.lol I personally know someone who has complete 1:1 fiberglass mold sections to build the entire car. He told me around 14,000 for the whole thing. All I have to do is build my own frame of course and do all the other stuff. I'm not mentioning his name or any contact until he says it's ok, he just let me see it all. He's had the molds for years, he's just waiting for the right time I guess. I'm going to finish KITT first, hopefully by summer, and after college, I just might build the 89 Batmobile. In my town people always get freaked out by the Knight Rider car driving down the street. When they look inside and see the dash and steeringwheel, they are even more freaked out. They would really freak out if I was driving an 89 Batmobile. That car is HUGE!!! This site rocks!! later

RE: Building the Batmobile.

Bryan, you have come to the right place. I suggest you take some time and read all of the post, even the old ones. You will find some great info. Good luck with KITT. Jack

RE: Building the Batmobile.

Sweet, another KITT builder! Welcome to the site! Maybe one day we'll both have KITT and a Batmobile sitting in out garages.

RE: Building the Batmobile.

Thanks Maul, yes, my dream is to one day have both in my garage!!! As soon as I finish KITT, I will begin building the 89 Batmobile. I already have 3 77 chevy caprice frames to start with and I'm trying to aquire a Viper V10, which I plan on putting in the 89 Batmobile, otherwise it's getting a V-12 from a Jaguar. But it's all in the future, gotta finish KITT first. I also have plans to possibly build the 66 Batmobile, A-Team Van, General Lee, Starsky and Hutch, Back To The Future, and the car from "The Car", and maybe the car from "The Wraith", and of course "Christine", there's so many.lol I want em all. I have decided that I will build TV and Movie Car replicas the rest of my life!!!.....as long as I can get away with it.lol KITT is my favorite, 89 Batmobile 2nd, then all the others. But, I want them ALL!!
