Are you kidding me? That car is freakin tight. But you know we won't believe you unless we see pics. I was digging through tht archives last night and saw pics of somebody's Tumbler build (Kevin's, I think?) and also one started by mr. dullam. So we KNOW they are working on Tumblers...

I've never used the bristle rollers, Kevin. Are they really that much better?

Tim, did you use polyurethane or polystyrene for your GC build? Also, did you use fiberglass directly, or did you use drywall mud or some other frosting to cover the body for sanding?

I used the blue insulation foam which is polystyrene. I then covered that with drywall mud. Next I will cover it with primer.

I just thought I'd bring this topic to the top again because there are a few new posters and i don't think everything has been summed up in 1 post so well as when Justin posted this one. Good work buddy.

RE: 1989 BATMOBILE REPLICA FAQ

My two cents: on the subject of chopper v.s. hand laid, or vacumn bagging, or composite materials, .i.e. graphite/kevlar, honeycomb etc.... The quality (air pockets,i.e. bridging etc.) uneven areas etc. All that stuff depends on the person doing the job. Some people will be in the best working conditions, etc... and do a horrible job. Some people will be in the worst working conditions, go slow, pay attention, have experience, stay on the part until all areas are packed in nice and tight, and all areas are even, Know the material so well that they know when to apply lamintating resin over gell coat to avoid de-lamination of the gel coat etc... no puddling of resin in low areas, etc.. etc... all depends on the WHO is doing the job.
Most people seem to believe in epoxy over polyester, that I've seen. I'm one. First off, I enjoy not having to smell the wicked styrene. But.... there are people who have worked with this stuff for so long and know the material so well that they can produce a part that could end up being comparable to epoxy in some ways. All depends on the guy's experience, and talent at this sort of thing.
Most of these Movie batmobiles require us to be able to stand on the body parts so there's a situation that is different from say a commerial car like a vette. GM probaly does not expect that lots of people will have to jump around on the hood.

I've noticed since I've been on boards that generaly people are constantly looking for that unique technique, blueprints, method, Materials, special clay, inst. video, that will make their stuff instantly better than it was. Something that is a mindless procedure, success without having to think, or have experience, or talent, a magic pill if you will. People have always asked me "how do you get the clay so smooth", hoping that there will be an instant solution to making their sculptures better. Bottom line is that experience, god given talent, abilty to reason a unique situation out, will ALWAYS be in the mix, as long as these things are done by human hands. Same with chassis building, engines, etc.. you guys know this.
So if someone were to buy a part from someone It really behove the buyer to check out their up close before gettin into a project with someone, regardless of thier equipment, methods, etc.. At least up close photo's if first hand is not possible.

RE: 1989 BATMOBILE REPLICA FAQ

Tim I love the bristle rollers, they perforate the mat allowing the air bubbles to escape. They also hold the mat in place much better; steel serrated rollers have a tendency to allow the mat to slip while rolling out the mat. Bristle rollers are cheaper than the steel ones and the bristle rollers are easily replaceable.
I used steel for years until I tried the bristle ones last year then I was turned forever.

RE: 1989 BATMOBILE REPLICA FAQ

""Well, I figure that as long as you are going to make a FAQ regarding this subject, you might wanna include as much actually USEFULL information as possible to anyone trying to build one. Essentially, all you've done is create a document that says, "it's too expensive for YOU, YOU don't know anyone that will build one for you, and no one is going to even bother talking to YOU until you harass them a bit and throw some money at it."
Why not add in something along the lines of all the little nitpickings that you all constantly do over this body. Show all the details that you have picked up over the years. Maybe suggest frames to use as a starting point, and exactly what you are looking at in terms of modifying them. Interior and dash decisions would also be helpful. Why not help the guy that wants to build one a little bit by giving a nice dash layout? Maybe something showing how to make the "hatch" work. Or how to make a fake "afterburner."
Or, are all the people who have built one just refusing to share information? I can understand this, if it is in fact the case, but I would still imagine SOME usefull information is out there. Why not try and put as much information regarding the build together in one place as possible? Try and make it just a bit easier to build one of these, 'cause God knows you've got a lot ahead of you building one from scratch.
Anyways, just some suggestions. I don't even have any interest in building a n 89. I want a tumbler, and would kill for a faq like the above for it. I assume there are 89 builders out there wanting the same.
Mike ""

Wow, well said. This is a great forum, no doubt, but it could use OODLES of improvements.
I agree, if a lot of you guys that are much more knowledgable about a particular thing, need to.... POST IT. Knowledge is what keeps us all free. I think it would be great to have a build section, divided to frame, drivetrane, exterior/body, interior, and paint, etc. A lot of GOOD car forums do this. It makes it easier for readers, and people posting info. I have a TON of information I'd like to share about interiors, lighting etc. But it's not oraginzed enough yet.
And yeah, way to much "so and so but I cant say", and "wink wink"? LOL, cmon just say it.

I am new, so I'll be nice and quiet now.

RE: 1989 BATMOBILE REPLICA FAQ

Good idea. Here's the problem. The only guys who have been willing to share any "build" pictures have been Kevin, Bill, and me. So far I would have to say Bill has added the best build pix, simply because he started his 89 from scratch and in just a few months has a car that is well ahead of anyone else. Most "builder" don't want to share their info for many different reasons. From what I gather it's "Trade Secret" to them. Although I will say some like BATGOD has come out and provided some great info. From what I hear there are probably dozens of replicas out there but good luck ever seeing them? Out of all the rumored cars the only one that has been confirmed is the Carmel car.

Now if you would like to make a "How too" section I'm sure the Webmaster would provide you a locked thread that we all could view but you would maintain.

If you want a car just send a PM to Batgod, Mark Towle, or Master Wayne. That should get you heading in the right direction.

You want me to pack it with all the other disks I still owe you? I already burned the MOVIES GREATEST CARS thing for you and Tim, but then I got slammed with opening the new shop and all. I am going to make a concentrated effort to get them out to you both by the END OF THIS WEEK!!! Ask Dee - I take forever but I eventually pull through!

RE: 1989 BATMOBILE REPLICA FAQ

That is all really nice, I am collecting info to start making my own 1989 batmobile, with certain modifications due to the road conditions in the caribbean i live in the dominican republic and we have huge street bumps therefore hidraulics are a most. i have an idea to make the illution of the fire of the turbine and i would like your opinion about it, it is to make the escape of the engine's pipes go through a direct pipe to the turbine exit which will have a light and reflective mirros and will recreat the illution of fire, i've done it but in an smaller scale and it looks ok
here is a graphic to explain better:

and I would like to know how to make the canopy work, whill it be with a hidraulic or electric motor? do you have blue prints to it?

RE: 1989 BATMOBILE REPLICA FAQ

hmmm,interesting.

Well, I'd like to adda few hair brained ideas, probably already stated, but overlooked...

-mirrors,

I have a camera, very small, monted on the back of my Murci Lambo replica now, that shows behind, and blind spots. It works great, and relieves having to have mirrors. A much needed thing on the 89.

Also, I bougth 2 AMT netherland turbines for a VERY realistic turbine sound when driving. They produce 50 pounds thrust each, an actual grat boost on the freeway to any car.... 100 lbs combined thrust moves a 1/2 ton of mass, without getting to technical. IE, you would feal it when the turbines throttle up 100%.

The trubines are for RC jets, but work great for amking a crap-load of noise.

Unfortunately though they are $3500 a piece.

Mahalo...

use firestone airbags. Hydraulics will kill your car, I KNOW, used to build show lowriders.

RE: 1989 BATMOBILE REPLICA FAQ

thanks for the tip about de hydraulics but will the air bag also work for the canopy? please check the idea I have, I have think of many ways to make the canopy but the one i find mor practical is with an extention bar to help the canopy wheel base move down the rail in a soft way, so graphically it would be like this:

is there an easier way to make it work? if so please let me know
also... it is a very good idea the building forum.

Do you have photos or a diagram of the instalation of the turbine? I would like to see that installed
