As you all know by now I am very hung up on making my dream Keaton car very functional...even if it means changing some of the original features the designers put into it. But since I think I would be left with a far better vehicle it sits well within my mind. Of course I would try to keep the car looking as much like the movie car as possible but without sacrificing its performance. Tonight I messed around with some images I found on this site and this is what I came up with. Please excuse the crudeness and my poor handwriting. Were I actually to finally undertake this project I would go over these designs at least 20 times in detail and probably consult with some aerodynamicists and race car engineers to get as functional a design as I can given the envelope we are dealing with. Since building from scratch would be cost prohibitive I would start with one of the prefabbed body kits chop it up and alter it. It would rest on a custom built tubular Cro-moly chassis with fully independent front and rear suspension and utilize a real turbine to drive the front and rear wheels, this car would NOT be thrust powered. I would then seek kit car registration. The car would be 8' at its widest point and taper in the rear (legal in NYS). The wings would be altered to be perfectly aligned with the airflow so as to minimize resistance. Final aerodynamic tuning would be done on the track with taped on string. If you are so compelled please feel free to comment, suggest, and ask questions. Thanks for looking.

Oh one thing that is not visible would be the smooth under-tray and complete compartmentalization of the underside to offer smooth airflow. Depending on how the vehicle's characteristic at speed were, the rear "window" vents may instead be used for under-body air extraction, once again offering negative lift and keeping the car firmly planted on the ground when exceeding 200mph autobahn speeds.

Ok Maxatron....Now thats what I'm talking about some very good ideas...Yeah the rear wings were a problem even when I trailered the body fron LA to my home near Sacramento. It was hard to drive faster than 55. The rear wings were acting like a rudder. Obviously the canopy wasn't on.....There is a philosopy of trying to keep the body as close to original as possible. Drivetrains, axles, tubular vs standard frames are always options.I'm interested in the true viability of using a turbine engine.

I predit once you look into the massive amounts of cost involved in building an 89 you may come back to the darkside and go with a conventional engine set-up. I am using a 2004 LS1 Cadillac CTS engine all aluminum rated at 460hp before I modify it [exhaust, chip, coil] with a built up 4L60 tranny.

I would love you to prove me wrong about the turbine and I hope to see you start a build log....There I challenge you to begin the build of a lifetime with one of the smallest groups of builders....Keaton 89 Batmobile....Chicks love the car.....BWD

Hey what are the headlight laws where you are from?  You might want to consider making a second set of headlights in the front above the original that fold down somewhat like a Corvette.   Some states require your headlights to be "X" amount of inches from the ground.

BWD, I figured as much with the fins, all the more reason why at the very least they have to be perfectly aligned with the body or anyone putting the old Gotham cruiser through its paces will be in for a surprise.

Shaggy, to be honest I didn't look into that , they are pretty lenient with all car modifications here in NY....save for tint, too loud exhaust, and if you have some Baja strength high mounted lights blinding everyone. But pop up lights would definitely be an option, or even mold in a flush fit plexiglass into the body with a dark tint When the lights are off you would not even know that there are lights behind it. When on the lights would shine through. I saw this done to the taillights on a custom highboy hotrod, they molded in the plastic and sanded it smooth with the body then applied clear to the whole thing such that the lens is indiscernable when the lights are off.

Then again this is all just my conjecture, I am no where near ready to undertake such a massive project.

That's awesome. I really dig the turbine routing in place of side mech.

Maxatron,

Your drawing of side mech(turbine routing) remind of me this car(though this one's exhaust)
