Well hello everyone!
I've been working through some of the final chassis fabrication on my 89 and I've been thinking about something for quite some time.
With the hinged trunk/hatch, how do all of you latch the bottom of it so that it is secure. I have three main things I want to accomplish:
(1) It's secure and doesn't rattl
(2) Strangers cannot open the hatch
(3) I can easily get it open and closed
From what I can tell of the original movie car it seems like they used some kind of hood pin mechanism to hold the hatch down.
I had contemplated doing something similar to a normal trunk latch with the usual connection and pull cable but the angles of the rear hatch are all funky that could make that a difficult process.
So my question to those who have 89's is: How are you latching your hatch/trunk?

Put a trunk latch on your after burner where the lid comes down and mount gas lift shocks on the sides and a pop up release for your blackberry.

Yeah, I have been thinking along those lines... just wondered if there was some kind of magic solution that would be less work LOL

GET MORE ACTUATORS... but I was wondering if you can force an actuator open or is it locked in place when not powered? if it's locked use actuators.... later

I said trunk but the hood latch works well also and yea when loss of power the plug in charger to your batteries is with a easy to get to cord is a must. Been there to many times I think that is how I busted my first canopy actuator.

My trunk has an electric trunk opener using a momentary switch from the dash. So yes I have to have the canopy open to open my trunk. Most modern trunk mechanism have that quick release pull cable. Mine is extended so I can pull it under the car. At the back of my car I have a remote battery lugs so I can jump the battery or trickle charge it without opening the car. On all my vehicles I have a simple power shut-off in a secret location that cuts all the power. My canopy works using a momentary two pull switch on the dash and one on the outside intake louvers. The outside one is positioned so when the switch is moved forward the canopy moves forward and same for moving it backwards. Where the actuator connects to the front of my canopy I have an oh S#&T cotter pin that can be pulled if the battery, actuator, switchor electrical system goes to heck. On my very first showing the terminal connector on the switch fell off and I had to pull that pin to roll the canopy back and forth. Its pretty claustrophobic under the canopy to begin with but when the canopy open fails it feels even more claustrophobic. Thank god for that quick release pin....BWD

Thanks Guys,
I like the idea of using a combination of the electronic popper and emergency release cable for a modern trunk latch. Most cars have those inside the trunk in case someone gets stuck in there. Having that cable hidden somewhere on the outside of the car is a great idea!
I've also been planning on exterior boost/charge ports as well that can be fairly easily accessed.
Dave, you and I are on the same wavelength My switching for the canopy is basically the same as yours other than I have added an extra option of using my smartphone as well as a wireless option.
And I also have the "oh crap" release pin on the inside of the canopy for power failures
