Another small update. I started working on the "Control Box" or middleware box of sorts. This box contains the electronics that talk to the receiver, sensors, and update the computers displays (The middleman in the system as it were..). I decided to go with the arduino platform for now. For those not familiar with arduino it is a dumbed down version of an embedded electronics platform and takes some of the grittier work out of building an embedded system. This will be the first time I have worked with it. If it goes south I may ditch the arduino and build the system from scratch. If I'm successful 80% of the system I'm building is using off the shelf components. At a minimum this system uses 3 programming languages. I have decided to incorporate a display with the box so you can see when it receives any signals from key fob and will help to troubleshoot if any issues occur. Below Is my first proposal for the design of the box. The electronics and key FOB prototype will hopefully be in this week and I can begin testing. So far the cost is still reasonable however the prototypes are getting expensive... Any comments or criticisms are appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Another update. I got Revision 2 of the Key Fob prototype. I think the design is getting really close. I had to make some changes to the dimensions to better fit the electronics. One more revision and I think the key Fob is ready for production....Also the Electronics and the display board came in. The display board requires assembly (soldering buttons, pins, resistors, etc. Once completed the the Display is modular and acts as a shield that you can simply install on the main board. Below are some pics of the hardware i'm using and construction of the LCD board.

Here are some pics of the R2 revisions. The KEY FOB has not been colored yet. The reason it is white is because it is sanded down for a smooth finish:

And the LCD board i'm assembling:

Hopefully next week I can integrate the receiver into the setup and get the main board up and running and getting input from the sensors that would be used through out the batmobile.

Got the LCD Shield Assembled and fired up. Was easier then I thought. The LCD Screen will be really nice for troubleshooting this system. Below are some pics of testing the output of the LCD screen.

The following text is displayed when the system first starts:

This text will be used when the tumbler key FOB buttons are pressed:

Hope to start working on wiring and setting up the receiver and getting the electronics into the Key FOB next week so I can start testing...

Thanks for looking.

Got the FOB assembled with electronics inside. One more revision and it should be good to go. Also need to add some color but because this is a prototype I'm not to concerned right now just want to get the system up and going.

Here is a picture of the bottom of the FOB:

This is looking absolutely great... If you are interested, here's my blog post about some of the fun that I've been having with Arduino as well

Nice looking Graphics brcewayne. Has a very update to date look for the Keaton batmobile. So far I'm digging the arduino platform. I can spend more time on the project and less time debugging hardware issues. I really like the display for troubleshooting VS. the blinking light method... Right now I'm waiting for another proto shield to come in so I can work on hooking up a few switches and maybe some sensors. Hopefully at some point I will work on the enclosure for the arduino. The key Fob needs a few minor tweaks and will be at production level. The only issue is the prototype is built from nylon which isn't exactly water proof like the ABS plastic a normal key FOB is made of. I may decide to have one built but I'm concerned that the quality may not be there...I'm also thinking about adding the second button to the key FOB but not sure just yet. I think I have the Key FOB pretty close to the movie visually and functionally so I'm pretty happy about that. I will definitely check out your blog on the batberry.

Hi Stevo.

How can I get hold of one of your tumbler fobs?

I'm currently working on the third version which has 2 buttons as opposed to one. Have to be careful making changes as the FOB's aren't exactly cheap and mistakes are costly. Once done however I can roll them off an assembly line... Hope to have the design changes done by next week and will submit the design to have it built. I'm also working coloring the FOB to the one in the movie. The one in the movie is actually a dark semi Metallic Gray but it shows up on screen as closer to black due to the lighting and darker hues. I'm also working my garage and shop as well working on getting a tube bender for the chassis (thinking about going air over hydraulic but its not cheap...)
