Hi BWD,

I'm on on the east coast, on a barrier island off the Florida coast. BTW, I have been checking this site out and I absolutely love the willingness to help others that everyone here has. Nobody could do any one of these builds without a little help and I am glad to be a part of that.

Now I have a question - What color would you say the frame of the batpod is? It looks black alot of times but in well lit pictures it seems charcoal gray... Help! I don't want to paint it the wrong color. Any thoughts anyone?

Matte black will read grey, on film, depending upon lighting, exposure etc. foam latex BB suit often reads grey, as does the tumbler. It is black.

Thanks for the info youngbat... matte black it will be.

Also, The bike is on the ground now ad under it's own weight for the first time. The steering rod in the front pipe had to be replaced with a thicker one because with all the weight on the bike, the rod would flex and the tire would only slightly turn when the handlebars twisted. Other than that, things are coming together nicely. Here are a few new shots with it on the ground. More pics to come.

Hey sdparker, I try not to be a jealous person but this is killing me. Your build is badass!!!

Now does the steering work like the movie vehicle? Do you mind me asking what type of steel tubing are you using? Is the suspension operational? Pardon my bluntness but I'm like a kid in a candy shop....

Nice work....BWD

Dave,

As for the tubing used I'm not sure exactly which tubing you are refering to so I will try to hit all the major points. The frame is made from several sizes of tubing from 5 inch to 1.5 inch with 1/4 inch wall thickness. In hindsight we probably could have used a little thinner of a wall thickness but at the time overkill seemed the best option. In addition to the tubing there are several pieces of cold rolled solid bar that are used for the steering linkage from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch. We tried 1/4 inch and it flexed to much and had to be replaced. And to your question on how it steers....yes it is identical to the movie bike in the way the steering linkage is set up. It was alot of trial and error to get the lengths correct so that the throw to turn ratio was comfortable but it steers suprisingly smooth now that its done. Not the best turning ratio, lol. Turns more like a long bed truck than a sub compact but it gets it done. The weight distribution is suprisingly balanced. Very low center of gravity. Pushing it around is almost effortless and the lack of need for a kickstand is a plus too. Hope to have it painted and start on the knee pads, foot pads and body panels over the weekend. Any other questions just let me know. I'll post more pictures tonight.

Hey sdparker.
This is simply amazing. We've had few members here who appeared out of thin air and started impressing people on day 1. Rusty was one such person who appeared out of nowhere and noticed the difference between 89 and 92 vehicles and then goes on record by building a 89 batmobile under 8 months from start to finish.. Shaggy was another with so many drawings, cads and actual build logs of so many different bat vehicles. BWD also who came out of nowhere and has since tackled on a batpod, tumbler and 89 vehicle build logs. T-Man, batman4reals , conrad and many other new and old members as well.

Anyway your stuff ia amazing. I upped your membership so you can view everything on the board. Feel free to look around and comment. BWD has a preliminary batpod build log and there are other long threaded discussion on batpods in many members only forum postings.

Great Stuff!

Thanks for the upgrade, I really appreciate it and will try to pay it forward on the forums. Here are a few new pics from today. We had to do a bit of surgery on it today as the frame tweaked a bit from excessive welding but we got it straight and will be back on track tomorrow. Steering has been upgraded and is working much better. I will try to get a video together for the weekend if possible. Thanks to everyone for the votes of confidence (Maybe I am not as crazy as everyone thought) and as always, more pics to come.
