Yeah I too have played the theme music while driving. For some reason I drive much faster when that's on.

OK definitely need some opinions.

you all know i wanted to use the Honda VTwin horizontal 20HPmotor. Well my good friend Dave (in the video) cam accross this for me:

someone was throwing it out and he got it for me. now here's my issue...it has a 14HP VERTICAL VTwin Briggs and Stratton motor.

now the 14HP is not an issue because this thing FREE...so I'll gladly eat the 6HP (the Honda new is about 1200...used probably 6-800).

My issue is the vertical shaft. Let the opinions begin.....

I agree with t-man. Now if you can find some forums for these guys who drag race and dirt track race lawn mowers with the vertical shaft engines, you might get some good idea's there.

But i must say, with your set up so far, horizontal shaft is less painfull.

here's something I read.....

"The pioneers of the outboard motor industry also had to address the problem of transferring vertical rotation to horizontal rotation. One solution to the problem of how to use a vertical engine for go karts takes a page out of outboard motor construction. In an outboard motor, the vertical engine turns a shaft that turns bevel gears attached to the shaft of the propeller. The key is use of the bevel gears - a set of gears designed to transfer rotational power to a defined angle and thus transferring vertical rotation to horizontal rotation. A go kart builder would be lucky to have at his/her disposal bevel gears salvaged from an old outboard motor to implement into the design of the go kart."

i'm still kicking around the idea of using this motor I got over the past weekend. being that I still have to buy my tires, rear axle w/tranny and drum brakes, round tubing and some kind of dually rim solution...i would love to not have to spend the loot for an engine.

so here's the lower drive gears of an 5HP motor...too small for the 14HP B&S but something like this..

any more thoughts on this? anyone? anyone? Bueller?

Hay conrad you have everything you need right there....this is what you do.

put the lawn mower up an blocks, look under it and you'll see a bunch of pullies and belts, look back at the rear axle and you'll see a pullie that is mounted hori. to a vert. shaft ...that shaft goes into the rear axle housing, well you'll understand when you see it .....you might want to use that axle instead of the other one,BUT you might want to look close at the vary ends of the axle, where the tires go on to see if the ends have a notch...

Ok here's another crazy a$$ idea from yours truely. You might consider looking for a used differential for a shaft driven Honda. You could adapt the driveshaft part to the bottom shaft of the lawn mower engine and then adapt a sprocket to the wheel conection of the differential. These drive shaft differential are all over the place and very moderately priced. I saw one recently that was brand new for $150 for a 2008 Honda that had been converted to a trike. Just another idea.....I think you could use a turbocharger to boost the HP...hehehe..Dave

Hey I just saw the steering video just amazing I feel like your personality comes shinning through.....
