Matt -- Awesome photos They're all (including the newspaper article) the Mercedes-based replica, right?

I'm pretty sure the 230 was offered in coupe form, so it wouldn't be hard to find a coupe. I know the later 300D was offered as a coupe -- I looked at one to buy back around 1999. Although I don't know how you'd feel about a diesel Car. Might seem kind of odd.

This is a 1962 300 SE coupe, with an automatic transmission, no less In-line 6-cylinder engine. In pristine condition like this its worth more as-is.

1973 400 SLC with a V8 automatic. Not sure how well the car's body lends itself to a replica. hmm

Hey all! Just got back from the Long Island Barris Show in NY. Had a great time...our good friend, Tony Wood was there, and let my wife Jill and I behind the ropes for a closer look at the cars. That's us(me in blue) standing in front of the '66 Batmobile. I hope to add more pics later.  Take care!

Hey Rage! First off, thanks for posting all the examples of the Mercedes cars, very cool. But no...I'm afraid no one has a replica of THE CAR here in the states (that I know of anyway). The cars they had on display were a '66 Batmobile, Monkeemobile, General Lee, James Bond Astin Martin, Ghostbuster Ecto, Villa Riviera, KITT, KARR, & a couple other Barris creations.

Sure thing. NONE of those car replicas were stateside builds? Seems kinda odd considering the following Barris (and custom cars in general!) has here.

I know the later 300D was offered as a coupe

Clarification, the specific model was the 300CD. 'C' for coupe. It was offered from 1978 to 1985. Example:

I've owned two diesel Mercedes, which I probably mentioned earlier: a 1975 300D (the first year of the 300D, a 3-liter I-5 diesel) and a 1981 300SD. Both were sedans, the latter was quite large, on par with a Lincoln Town Car. The first car's frame was probably too small for a project like this, but more specifically I think the engine would have been underpowered.

For 1977 till the end of its run the 300D/240D's bodystyle was different. The 240D was identical but had a 2.4-liter I-4 diesel engine.

A 380 SEC or 500 SEC (both had the body, but different engines) seems like it'd be more fitting for the project. 500 SEC shown:

Well, here it is.....finally! Thanks to Tony Wood for finding it for me, my project MarkIII for building a replica of THE CAR is now a reality. It's in CA right now, and I hope to take delivery of it soon.

Once I get it here, I will be starting on its deconstruction, and will be posting pics as I go....after all, Jack loves pics, right?

Hope all is well with everyone...it's good to be back!!

Exciting

Were a lot of photos taken of the original as Barris built it? I've seen two or three on here, but I'd imagine you'd want a lot of them if you were going to retroengineer one..
