You said it...cashola. gas is through the roof, taxes on LI are ridiculous and the rate on my mtge just went up almost 4%. Also the fact that hundreds of chassis have been built with MIG welding so I figure my FIRST project will be done that way...just makes sense for me now. Also want to start with something I think I can handle - hence the name of my thread..."Rookie".

Hey regular unleaded is $3.45 and premium is $3.70 in Northern California ut supposedly we have designer blended gas for less smog. I sold my F-150 because the 5.4 engine was getting 11 miles to the gallon and it was my main vehicle after I gave my son the 30mpg Camray{love that car}. Bought a Mazda 6 for my daughter's future car and it gets 25mpg but I have to admit its fun to drive and very fast zoom zoom zoom. Gas will continue to go up in price so really our only options are to drive less and get a more fuel economical car. When I was in Europe this summer I never saw a Ford F-150 they have been reduced to driving cars that look like go carts and gas is around $8 a gallon. We Americans are the luckiest people on the planet. My boat gets one mile to the gallon with twin v-8s and when people ask me what kind of gas milage my T-Rex gets I like to have a big smile and say" oh it gets seriously bad gas mileage. No really bad...in fact I've found its actually cheaper to be towed around town....hahaha BWD

Haven't posted in a while so here goes... Dave, that was hilarious...lmao (<-rarely use such acronyms, but here it's so appropriate). Gas on LI for regular is about 3.25 a gallon. 3.45 in Cali? Ooooh! (<- the facial expression that accompanys this word is much like right after seeing a nasty slam dunk). If 2 college graduate, alumini dudes can make a car run on batteries and get 300 miles to the gallon, todays advanced car companies can certainly come up with something like this right? Right. and the guy who stood up and said this at the Board meating didn't show up to work the next day. I'm on a rant. I'll stop now and get focused.... I'm specing out mechanics for future use on my project. It's hard to find someone you trust and someone you know might not take it as seriously as you want them to. How do you know how much somebody knows? Ask them I suppose but they could be blowing smoke up my butt. A shop just did the timing and valve seals for my wifes turbo spyder...nice guy, seems honest... I suppose, let's just see how the engine performs and weather i have to take it back or not. it seems better to me....idles more steady, not like it's about to stall, shifts into gear a little different - have to drive it more...and no smoking afer a long idle. I'll have plenty of time to find someone right for the job as I prepare to actually start building...it's getting closer and I'm feeling it. My tube bender comes in next week and I'm preping my garage for a place to put it. the MIG welder will have to wait with Turkey Day at Conrad's just around the corner and some home improvements. So I'll tack weld with the stick and finish with the MIG once i get it. sounds like a plan.

I'm not sure if I'm the one who should be answering the question of "who can you trust?" since I have been screwed over by the best of them and so often I might add. Its mostly because I want to believe. On the other hand I've gotten some killer deals and great craftsman working with me. My first rule is trust no one. By that I mean let them earn your trust through a history of performing at a great level. Start out small and build up to larger projects as they earn your trust. Now I've broken that rule so often its become my career being too trusting. Second rule never pay anyone more money than work that has been done. I usually break this rule often because I feel sorry for the guy or I'm just gullible. I usually give deposits or pay the person a little ahead on the work to be done. I even give money to bums that have no intention of helping me out in any way. Never become personally involved. I am always getting personnally involved with customers, fabricators, strangers and CLTC members. I even remember bailing out one of my workers from jail only to have him steal my gas powered post-hole digger. So I guess I'm saying we all have great rules that we don't always follow and sometimes end up getting srewed over by people we thought we could trust. This is called living. When we are dead that's when we will finally be free of being screwed over.....Just my opinion....BWD

Whoa, i really couldnt say it any better myself , i can totally agree with everything you said too BWD. I used to work for a Steel Factory (Precision Strip Inc) getting paid a good $1,000 bring home every friday, then i heard from a friend who i hadnt seen since Middle School, (keep in mind we were good friends then) he said that he had been tossed a bad card in life (to say the least) and that he was about to be kicked out on the street, so i took my 5 days vacation time from my job, as well as the $2,000 bucks it was going to take in gas to come get him, and i drove up to keep him from being kicked out on the street. I offered to let him stay with me until he can get back on his feet. Not only did he trash my home with his filthy way of life, but he made no attempts to get a job (played video games all day), and forced me to become so broke that I HAD to move back in with my parents (at 19 years of age) And go from working at a Steel Factory bringing home a good $1,000 bucks a week, to working at Wendys Fast Food for $5.15 an hour. To say the least, i am by no means that trusting anymore. I still take chances, but i wait it out, and try to see if its going to bite me in the ass, as i have been done before.

I seriously don't understand what people get out of taking advantage of someone else...do they think this is supposed to be how to live? Get what you can, now matter how? Terrible. That's alien to me. all that's created from that is enemies. a complete waste of energy and time. I feel for others who get took,,,i will make an effort to do what you said Dave: build the trust over time using the quality of work as the benchmark. but until them, it's X files all the way..."Trust no One."

I guess it all comes out to the fact that we are all human. I don't think we start out wanting to hurt others or let people down but at some time we all do. You can't stay with a girlfriend because you don't want to hurt their feelings by leaving, You can't go a day without breaking a rule or hurting someone's feelings. I guess the difference is intention but don't they say that all the good intentions in the world don't make everything right. We are on this world for a short period of time and yet we are dead forever. We try to do the best we can and our attempt at doing the best has to be good enough. We live on through the memories of the ones we leave behind and in a generation or two there's no one there to remember you. So live your life the best that you can and live as if today were the last day. Try and say a kind word to everyone you meet and something I have tried to modify in my life is not to judge others. Even if I think what they are doing is wrong its not necessarilly up to me to judge them but instead try to understand them through compassion... and always forgive others as you will someday need forgiveness from someone.... That's it... Goodnight BWD

Thank you for todays sermon on the mount. All true. Words to live by.
I've been tack happy with the welder lately, practicing my tacking skills. Yeah i know, tacking isn't that hard, but I don't want to leave globs of molten metal all over the place. I'm trying to make a very small tack, but strong enough to hold. it's working out pretty good..i'm picking up some different rods today. I've been using 6011 & 3013 since I started. My book tells me to use 7018 for the tubing...going to look for that today. I'm learning alot about which rod (or wire) works best for bonding the material I'm using (dom 1 5/8 x .095 ) at 60 AMPS.
