got my nocher and have been notching away. BIG difference from trying to grind notches in vs using the PT notcher. much cleaner and welds are better. next up on the list is the bender and MIG welder. then I'll be ready for serious practicing on notching, bending wnd assembling tubing together at different angles and such. fun fun fun. on another front, one of the girls at my office knows I'm a bat nut and made me this over the weekend. Bat-Krispy anyone?? Good thing I took a picture, cause this thing is toast when i get home!

here are some pics of my welding practice with tubing. I must point out this is all done with a stick welder. The MIG is now within reach so until then I practice. this first shot is the very first attempt at notching with a bench grinder then stick welding it together. I first tried the 6011 sticks. pretty yucky nasty weld. the notch wasn't flush and I had trouble with the angles and obviously went to fast. yuck.

no here is where I slowed it down. I also now used my Pro Tools notcher. for notches. Looks a tad better. Was steady at first than lost sight of the seam and created a nice little crater while pausing too long. also had the amps a bit too high here.

you guys give great advice...sure i get it from others elsewhere, but they don't know what I'm doing. knowing I have that connection with the people on this site makes the advice better. that may be dumb but it feels good. Again can't wait for that MIG but I'm beginning to get better with this stick. here's where the amps were right and penetration was good, and the beads stayed consistent compared to the other welds. still not the work of art like SOME GUYS (Dave's guys), but an improvement. I'm uderstanding the fundamentals: Slow, steady, consistent direction. You guys can now appreciate what Master weldors those guys at Dave's shop are. I look up to these guys. Definetly an art to this and anyone that says otherwise is a fool who knows no better.

ok so here's my work of art. a simple butt weld. these are easy compared to the tubing in my view cause by the third or fourth try they looked like this. So that's it for now...i'm out of scraps. My next visit to the steel shop will be for more practice tubing and a couple of long pieces for the bender I'm ordering next week. C

Heres a video I found on making nice bends with a cheap bender. Its a pretty sweet tip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWT3N3m4bE4 Do you watch the "Power Block" on Spike, if you do than disregard the following. It's on on the weekends in the morning. I really like Xtreme 4X4 and Muscle Car. They both do lots of fabricating and have great tips.

The bender your getting is definitely better. I just liked that he used sand to get the same effect as a mandrel bender.

Awesome Job Conrad, i can definately see the improvements ^_^, and just as you pointed out, it did appear that you had the "heat" turned up to high, im by no means a welding expert, but thats one thing my dad has taught me. I'm hoping to learn more real soon. Keep up the great work Shagg
