Ugh. Humidity. After tremendous downpours up in these parts yesterday the humidity warped the heck out of all the cardboard. I did however find that my wood frame is a little too tall and narrow...so i did learn something while doing the body panels. while trying to copy the panels off my hot wheels model, the proportions were off which led me to the fact that the frame was a little too tall. I will adjust this when I get to steel which is getting closer. an electrician is putting a 60AMP plug in my garage next week - which means I will start my practice welds next week. The welding book I bought has a nice trailer project so I'll start with that when I'm done practicing. And when I'm good and ready, I'll start buying the steel I need for my bridging vehicle chassis.

Humm yeah I was a little worried about the height.  Hey think 88% of the original size.  That will get the width under 8 feet and the length around 13.5 feet.....  Not that I would know for sure......    I have some pictures I can email you if you would like.

Hey Jack,,,yeah that'd be nice. the narrow-ness will also be a problem...I'd be sitting on a transmission. and wow you got the length right. the current height tho is a little under 5 feet with about 8 inch ground clearance. adjustments will be made. I am glad tho that this is being discovered now. how i love this site. thanks again Jax!

Hey Conrad, I too was a little concerned about the smaller scale but remember it doesn't have to be exactly like the original.  I think its possible but was there a particular reason you wanted it smaller?  In America we like to supersize everything. BWD

BWD...The rookie that I am, I am a little intimidated by the machine. I am in love with the Tumbler but thought "can I REALLY make one?" I thought that a smaller version was more likely but as Jack estimated, my wood scale model is almost 90% of the actual size. While I first wanted to make a sandrail sized version with a large ATV motor, the model turned out to be 13 1/2 feet long. This led to the choice of a V6 which is an Idea I liked very much. So knowing this, I will take my time in doing my homework and making it larger than anticipated. There's a local welding shop that offered to help out with ordering tubing and pointers in welding. While I will be doing alot of the welding myself, I will use this shop for cutting, bending and, of course, helpful advice and information.

Yep, I'd love to continue the body but maybe i should've done it in January when it was 1 and a half degrees outside and not so humid. all my cardboard warped. Also my chassis height and width is off - i noticed this when I got to the left side panel. it came to a point where to make it fit, the panels would have to be oversized and it would've been all out of proportion. You build, You learn! I love it. If it wasn't for this site and some good tips from the great builders here, I might've half-assed it.

Never.

So I've concluded that a well proportioned frame that will make the panels fit properly. length, width, height all have to be right. my size is not that far off from the original vehicle from the Advanced Sciences Division at the Wayne Foundation. So my focus is on perfecting my chassis.

Hey Conrad when I set out to build the Tumbler I focused on building the frame to be a little smaller and shorter.  But to accomidate some of the mechanicals I had to build mine a little longer.  The idea was that the finished fiberglass panels could be attached to the outside of the full roll cage. Now that I've seen the frame and some of the metal and glass panels that are going to be attached I may just drive it around a while before the panels are made. I'm going to install some body tabs to the outside of the frame so that the body will be attached to it. I too made a mock up of the Tumbler with wood and styrafoam and I learned alot from that experience.  One thing was the lack of visability so I am going to accomodate some additional windows in my Tumbler.

Dave, nice...can't wait to see the angles on the windows and how you'll do the rear view.

Some news about my build...the wood model is still around and continues to tell me to re-size when doing steel.  shorter and wider.  I feel very confident about knowing what's next and getting it done.  a few more weeks of getting my welding skills back and I will begin on a wider version of the bottom of the frame (1 1/4" or 1 1/2" square tubing).

Very Excited...

Hey Conrad, A suggestion before you start welding that expensive steel you might consider outlining the Tumbler in rebar.  Its very inexpensive and easy to bend with a rebar bender.  It would also give you a chance to practice the welding if needed. Plus you would end up with a great piece of art sculpture you could sell on E- bay.  Again this is just a suggestion.BWD
