I started out planning to build a small Batman elevator like the small one used by Adam West. After quite some additional thought I decide to build a practical Batman elevator.
Ended up with the following specifications for my Batman elevator:
4 feet six inches X 4 feet six inches transport basket.
Weight lift capacity 1000 pounds.
Heavy duty vertical I-beam track system.
Double redundant safety systems.
Twin lift 25,000-pound strength cables.
SDS braking system.
Power failure magnetic motor braking system.

hey sly,
You got that right.
Just getting the hole cut through the 15" deep main floor was a challenge.
Had to cut through double 2" X 12" floor/ceiling joists.
Then reframed the hole with doubled 2" X 12" pressure treated lumber.

Already, did all the wiring. Learned to do electrical work myself about 30 years ago.
Attached is a photo-image taken down the elevator shaft that gives a good view of the vertical I beams that the elevator basket/platform rides on. The twin and redundant lift cables with 25000 pounds breaking strength each can also be seen.

| You are moving quite quickly on this project. I assume the basket attaches to the I-beams with some sort of roller assembly?

Attached is a photo-image that shows the roller assembly and SDS braking system.
Should both the 25,000 basket lift cables break the SDS braking shoes will grab the eye beam within 3 inches of basket free fall drop.

Received an email today, "I have been thinking about building a Batman elevator using a modified winch or hoist motor with pulleys for lifting my basket. Would the clutch mechanisms found in winches and hoists be good enough to make my elevator safe?
That depends on whether your elevator will be used to transport cargo and/or people.
IN NO WAY CAN YOU MAKE A SAFE ENOUGH ELEVATOR TO TRANSPORT PEOPLE FROM HOIST/WINCH PARTS.
Using modified winch/hoist and pulleys could be used to build an effective and safe enough elevator for cargo.
As long as you are not underneath it when it crashes or too close to flying debree from a violent crash.
Worst case scenario is that the hoist/winch elevator fails and falls to bottom of shaft while carrying cargo.
I have showed images of my elevator for informational purposes only. In no way should my elevator be used as a plan or recommendation on how to build an elevator to transport people. Building and using an elevator has risks.
Anything with the possibility to fail has potential to fail. That includes elevators. vertigo

Received an email today, "How fast does the elevator vertically travel?"
The elevator motor and gear box have a variable adjustable vertical travel speed range capability.
Vertical Speed Range: One foot per second to one foot per 6 seconds.
The faster the vertical climbing speed the less the carrying weight.
I have my elevator set at one foot per 5 seconds. This gives me the full 1000 pounds lift capacity.
Elevator motors are available in 120 V and 240 V
Note: 120V motors are prone to overheating with too frequent cycling. Not a problem with 240 V motors.
My elevator has a 240V motor.
