So, I've complete the modeling for the RAT, now comes the fun part... The main housing (roughly 16" in diameter) is the only piece too big to print as a whole. So what to do? Easy - section into 3 pieces, of course! However, sectioning creates a small issue at some of the bond lines where the material is rather thin. So, now the fun part, creating many alignment slots for miniature biscuits (oh-that I have to design and print too) to fit into for aligning everything up and offering a stronger bond surface area, especially in the thin walled areas.
Also need to do some sheer testing with some specialty plastics glues....

Next on the list of fun projects to try, is something truly different - fully functioning afterburner turkey feathers that open and close with throttle position...

Would running multiple printers be a way to deal with a hour intensive project like this? vertigo

Yes, having the correct RAT off a Vulcan is certainly a conversation piece. One of my (correct) RATs (that I am selling) is off Vulcan #272. And while I would really like to have that piece on the front of one of my cars, coming it at over 45 pounds without a drive system adapted to the turbine wheel, it's just too heavy for practical road use. One pothole and that RAT will create a moment arm that no fiberglass body, even supported with backing structure will survive with those tiny mounting plates.
So, the smart move is to have a stunt double who weighs much less, when prowling the streets...

Yes, multiple printers do help as do having different types of printers for the different types of models. The blades for instance are being printed in a slightly smaller dual extruder printer with water soluble support structures, whereas the larger units currently have to go into the MAX (single extruder) which, while it can print a pretty big piece, is still limited on size by my standards. The only real issue with the single extruder printers is that your support structure is the same material as your part, so, in some cases, it is a real biach to get the support structure off when done, especially PETG laid at 220 Celsius. In the end, the dual extruder is the way to go if you are printing mostly small to medium sized parts. And, I'll say it again Qidi, Qidi, Qidi - great support!!!
I'm looking to get a truly large scale 3D printer next, hopefully with a dual extruder. That way I can print large parts in one piece and just wash off any support structure... And when I say large scale, I'm talking like 36x48x60 - ginormous capabilities for prototyping car, boat, and airplane parts...and I want, er need that capability.

So, kinda FL cold and rainy today. Exterior Christmas lights are now up, so what to do? Well, after a few hours on the tube this morning, I was able to design a 3D printable two piece seat halo that will have the capability to insert a mesh net in the center just like on the original Recaro LX seats. Also designed it so I can vary the spacing on the insert rods so it can work on multiple types of similar looking seats... Time for a stogie!!

How big are you looking to print on a regular basis? Complex geometries with undercuts requiring support material?
Been looking at possibly a dual head Modix, but need to see it operating in person first...
