Received an email today asking about 3D modeling methods.
This information posted on Wikipedia presents a very good description of the subject.
Part One
Modeling
3D printable models may be created with
computer-aided design (CAD) package
3D scanner
A plain digital camera and photogrammetry software

3D printed models created with CAD result in relatively fewer errors than other methods. Errors in 3D printable models can be identified and corrected before printing. The manual modeling process of preparing geometric data for 3D computer graphics is similar to plastic arts such as sculpting.

3D scanning is a process of collecting digital data on the shape and appearance of a real object, creating a digital model based on it.

CAD models can be saved in the stereolithography file format (STL), a de facto CAD file format for additive manufacturing that stores data based on triangulations of the surface of CAD models.

STL is not tailored for additive manufacturing because it generates large file sizes of topology optimized parts and lattice structures due to the large number of surfaces involved.

A newer CAD file format, the Additive Manufacturing File format (AMF) was introduced in 2011 to solve this problem. It stores information using curved triangulations.

Part Two
Printing

Before printing a 3D model from an STL file, it must first be examined for errors. Most CAD applications produce errors in output STL files of the following types:

holes
faces normals
self-intersections
noise shells
manifold errors

A step in the STL generation known as "repair" fixes such problems in the original model. Generally STLs that have been produced from a model obtained through 3D scanning often have more of these errors as 3D scanning is often achieved by point to point acquisition/mapping. 3D reconstruction often includes errors.

Once completed, the STL file needs to be processed by a piece of software called a "slicer," which converts the model into a series of thin layers and produces a G-code file containing instructions tailored to a specific type of 3D printer (FDM printers). This G-code file can then be printed with 3D printing client software (which loads the G-code, and uses it to instruct the 3D printer during the 3D printing process).

Printer resolution describes layer thickness and X–Y resolution in dots per inch (dpi) or micrometers (µm). Typical layer thickness is around 100 μm (250 DPI), although some machines can print layers as thin as 16 μm (1,600 DPI). X–Y resolution is comparable to that of laser printers. The particles (3D dots) are around 50 to 100 μm (510 to 250 DPI) in diameter. For that printer resolution, specifying a mesh resolution of 0.01–0.03 mm and a chord length ≤ 0.016 mm generate an optimal STL output file for a given model input file. Specifying higher resolution results in larger files without increase in print quality.

Creating original files in CAD can take many hours to create.

3D Laser Scanners can create usable files in an hour, or so, saving hundreds or thousands of CAD work hours. (Need something that exists in physical world. A model, existing form, or something similar.)
3D laser scans may also be used with CAD to create hybrid or combined files.

3D Scanners
3D Laser Scanning is a non-contact, non-destructive technology that digitally captures the shape of physical objects using a line of laser light. 3D laser scanners create “point clouds” of data from the surface of an object. In other words, 3D laser scanning is a way to capture a physical object’s exact size and shape into the computer world as a digital 3-dimensional representation.

3D laser scanners measure fine details and capture free-form shapes to quickly generate highly accurate point clouds. 3D laser scanning is ideally suited to the measurement and inspection of contoured surfaces and complex geometries which require massive amounts of data for their accurate description and where doing this is impractical with the use of traditional measurement methods or a touch probe.

So, what file format to choose.
Xometry Europe · Apr 15, 2020
https://xometry.de/en/3d-printing-file-formats-compared-obj-stl-amf-and-3mf/

"STL
The STL (Standard Tessellation Language) file format is the pioneer 3D printing file format. It was invented in 1987 by Chuck Hull, the inventor of 3D printing. Three decades later, the STL file format is still the most widely used and is considered to be the standard file format in 3D printing. This is because, having been around for such a long time, STL is compatible with most 3D CAD software and other software and hardware in 3D printing.

Triangular tessellations (all3dp.com)
One key characteristic of STL is that it saves geometry using tessellations. Tessellation is the process of covering (tiling) a surface with a series of geometric shapes in such a way that there are no gaps or overlaps. In an STL file, a 3D model’s geometry is encoded by numerous triangles covering the model’s surfaces.

For curved surfaces, a large number of arbitrarily small triangles are required to cover the surfaces. However, the larger the number of triangles employed in a model, the bigger the file size.

Another distinguishing characteristic of the STL 3D printing file format is that it only stores geometry data. Other data related to a model such as colour, texture, and material are left out. This wasn’t a problem when printers could only print in one colour and one material at a time. It may still not be a problem if you require a simple prototype. However, with advancements in 3D printing such as multi-colour and multi-material printing, and with the use of 3D printing for producing fully functional, ready-to-use objects, the STL file format may well be on its way out
Pros
Compatible with virtually every hardware and software in the world of 3D printing
Most widely used and shared file format for 3D printing. Millions of STL models are available for easy download online
Cons
Can only store geometry data. Colour, texture, and material data is left out
Level of detail is limited. For example, curved surfaces are approximated
The higher the accuracy of the file, the larger it would be
There may be holes and overlapping triangles in the tessellation as the file format is error-prone. Note that imperfections can be detected and fixed using STL repair tools. This, however, is time-consuming
Scale and units are not specified
Conclusion
In conclusion, we recommend the STL formats for simple geometry and single colour prototypes. "

Received an email asking, What 3D printer for around 1,000.oo has the best quality with the largest printing area and volume?
After searching for and studying 3D printers with these parameters I came to the conclusion that the CREALITY CR-10 MAX 3D printer that sells for 999.99 fit these parameters the best.
https://creality3d.shop/collections/3d-printer

Anyone out there have a different 3D printer recommendation for the stated set of parameters?

The importance of learning CAD (Computer Aided Design
Think about learning to use CAD with at least familiarity as the cost of admission into being able to use CNC tables (that support plasma cutting, routing, milling) and 3D printers.
This is not a skill that can be learned over night. Quite frankly it takes months and even years to become really skilled and 1-4 weeks (25-100 hours) to be somewhat functional.

Still want to experiment and learn about CAD for free.
Don't run out an buy a pricey program. If you have a computer with windows etc. there in a lot of freeware CAD programs available.

Received an email today, "All that computer stuff is great but most people can't afford CNC programs and cutting and printing machines. I want to build a batmobile but I don't have very much money for the cnc tools. Looks like batmobile building required technology is turning this into a rich guy project."

vertigo, "You could always go old school. Scaling squares, image enlargement projectors, and pantographs."

Part Four First posted 12-20-2017
3D Pantographs

Have you ever thought “if I only had a 3 axis deep Z 2x4, 4x4, 4x8,
5x10, 10x20 CNC table for plasma cutting steel, routing foam”,
etc.,etc… While we are fantasizing might as well add a laser or
mechanical touch probe to scan our plastic models into a 3D CAD
program. One could easily spend a 100,000.oo on this perfect set up.
OR, you could get real and cast off the CNC mentality that is holding
your mind back from creating your Bat Vehicle dreams and making them a
reality.

Fact is most individual sculptural artists, and Bat Vehicle builders
are really sculptural artists, are not using CNC. The reality is that
99.9 % of all sculptural artists are still using 3D pantographs to
duplicate and/or enlarge their 3D works. Many of these tables are home
made. History shows 3D enlarged statues and other items were being
produced by 1650 on 3D pantographs.

Why?

The minimum table size that provides enough freedom to effectively
work on vehicle size sculpture is a 4’ x 8’ capacity with deep Z. Add
the computer, CAD/CAM program, and mechanical laser probe setup.
Cost:60,000 plus.

A 3D carving/routing pantograph 4’ x 8’ table for use on wood, foam,
and plastic can be constructed for a minimum of 500.00 plus the cost
of a router.

The Bat Vehicle plastic scale models (pictorial blueprints) contain
all the information necessary to make full-size parts. No need for a
computer, CAD/CAM program, and laser/mechanical probe.

The 3D carving/routing pantograph draws its input information from the
plastic model via the tracing stylus (input). Once the pantograph is
adjusted to the desired multiplication factor it becomes an automatic
scale converter that requires no calculations. One needs only to trace
over the model or model part with the tracing stylus and the other
stylus (output) that holds a router automatically cuts the increased
scale part in 3D.

The 3D pantograph design allows it to automatically and accurately
calculate the scale multiplication factor into the movement of the
drawing stylus on X Y Z axis. Thus, zero scale translation errors and
the source of nearly most all errors come from the ability of the user
to follow the lines of the model with the tracing stylus.
(No computer, CAD program, CNC operated machine, or even electricity
needed, except for the router and maybe a work light.

Thousands of 3D carving/routing pantograph plans are available online
for free. Some are sold as kits with patterns.

You need only find a strong design and scale it up large enough to fit
your table size. I plan to build one of these to make the afterburner
and intake parts for my Tumbler and the more complex parts for my
DOJ/Justice League Batmobile. vertigo

Built my 24"x48" CNC router from scratch and it wasn't very expensive. Biggest expense was the electronics. If you do a DIY table it will be a fraction of the cost of a commercial table.
