Received an email today asking,
"What exactly is a cel and how much are the more valuable cells going for?"
See last paragraph for Cels going for 50,000.00 plus!!!

This summary from Wikipedia says it all in very few words.
Wikipedia
"Cel"
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

CEL (disambiguation).
A cel, short for celluloid, is a transparent sheet on which objects are drawn or painted for traditional, hand-drawn animation. Actual celluloid (consisting of cellulose nitrate and camphor) was used during the first half of the 20th century, but since it was flammable and dimensionally unstable it was largely replaced by cellulose acetate. With the advent of computer-assisted animation production, the use of cels has been all but abandoned in major productions. Disney studios stopped using cels in 1990 when Computer Animation Production System (CAPS) replaced this element in their animation process, and in the next decade and a half, the other major animation studios phased cels out as well.

Technique
Collector's item

Technique
Painting with acrylic paint on the reverse side of an already inked cel.
Generally, the characters are drawn on cels and laid over a static background drawing. This reduces the number of times an image has to be redrawn and enables studios to split up the production process to different specialised teams. Using this assembly line way to animate has made it possible to produce films much more cost-effectively. The invention of the technique is generally attributed to Earl Hurd, who patented the process in 1914.
The outline of the images are drawn on the front of the cel while colors are painted on the back to eliminate brushstrokes. Traditionally, the outlines were hand-inked but since the 1960s they are almost exclusively xerographed on. Another important breakthrough in cel animation was the development of the Animation Photo Transfer Process, first seen in The Black Cauldron, released in 1985.
Typically, an animated feature would require over 100,000 hand-painted cels.
Collector's item
Production cels were sometimes sold after the animation process was completed. More popular shows and movies demanded higher prices for the cels, with some selling for thousands of dollars.
Some cels are not used for actual production work, but may be a "special" or "limited edition" version of the artwork, sometimes even printed ("lithographed") instead of hand-painted. These normally do not fetch as high a price as original "under-the-camera" cels, which are true collector's items. Some unique cels have fetched record prices at art auctions. For example, a large "pan" cel depicting numerous characters from the finale of Who Framed Roger Rabbit sold for $50,600 at Sotheby's in 1989, including its original background.
Disney Stores sold production cels from The Little Mermaid (their last film to use cels) at prices from $2,500 to $3,500, without the original backgrounds. Lithographed "sericels" from the same film were $250, with edition sizes of 2,500–5,000 pieces.

The Heath Ledger Joker film cells are in great demand.
Many people have started Batman related film cell collection.

What Batman related character villian has the most collectability.
A good indicator is when the villian wins the best villain category at the MTV Movie and TV Awards such as Heath Ledger's 2009 for the Joker in The Dark Knight.
Heath Ledger's Joker related memoriabilia has the highest collector value depending on how the collector has organized the collection criteria and from the viewer perspective that the collection is motivate towards.

Received an email today reminding me that I had forgotten to mention Batman comic book cover art collecting.

It has become very popular in multiple categories over the past 25-yers to collect just the cover art from Batman related comic books. All major categories a readily found on the internet. Real bargains can be found on eBay and lesser deals on Amazon. Prices range from 10.00 to tens of thousands.

Category One: These collect only printed original covers from Batman relate comic books. Many of these are original comic book front covers that were separated from most or all of the original complete comic.
Price range: 8.00 to tens of thousands.

Category Two: Cover reproductions that are the same size and colors as the original Batman comic.
Price range: 10.00 to 300.00 with most starting in cost at 200.00 matte mounted in frames.
Appear frequently on eBay/Amazon

Category Three: Cover reproductions that are enlarged in size (usually around 2 x 3 - 3 x 5) in two major divisions. Art and color stay close to comic original or detail is sharpened and colors enhanced and vibrant.
These look great with a few inches of matting in chrome and/or matte black frames.
Price range: Real quality begins at around 500.00 mounted in frames and prices may climb to a couple of thousand.
