Nope, no body (or even donor car) yet. So, you say, why does he need the hood latches? Well, I am going to build a batmobile. I am a person who follows through on what I make my mind up to do. I jumped out of an airplane 103 times in a single day in 1999 and rode a unicycle across the United States in 2001- and the reason I mention that is because those things took immense planning and persistence to actually pull off. I have decided that a batmobile is for me.

I really hate the phrase "I can't", because I largely believe that "can't" means "won't". So, even with not having the car or body, I'm going to grab whatever parts become available. I'm also not swimming in cash, but again, I believe that where there's a will, there's a way. I have 110% of the will!

The long awaited update!

To begin, I made something to hold my wheel cone and emblem on. It is basically a circle with my bolt pattern cut out with a cylinder welded on. It is put on first, then the wheel is mounted over it. Next, you set the cone over it and use the symbol to screw the cone into the cylinder! We used Mickey Thompson tires and Centerline Wheels.

The next step was building the frame. I honestly thought that it would be more of an issue, but it has gone very smoothly so far. I used 4x4 inch, 1/8 inch thick, black iron tubing to finish my chassis. I am using 2x2 inch, 14 gauge, black iron tubing to brace my body. I sat the body over my axles to get the measurements for the tubing. I removed it to weld the chassis and mount my motor. I moved the motor back, and needed to either get a new driveshaft or have my modified. At first, I just my aluminum one down to the appropriate size. When we went to pick up a new slip yoke, the parts salesman mentioned that an aluminum driveshaft isn't recommended for such a powerful engine. I contacted a local company that specializes in custom vehicle parts. The new, steel, driveshaft was less than $300. It fits like a charm! In order to build the body supports, I put the shell back on. To get it to the proper height off of the ground, I used some scrap lumber that I had laying around. After getting everything the proper height off of the ground, I was able to get started!

On a side note, I have decided to go ahead and get some things cut out of the shell. So far, the head lights, air intakes, and small side windows have been cut out. I also got my steering wheel in! Next up, I am going to ordering my recaro seats, and who knows what will come after that!

Hi there Texasbatman. I am envious of all that are building batmobiles on here.
Love what you are doing on your build. Your description and pics of the items you are building make it easy to understand and follow. I had been giving much thought on how to mount the cones to my wheels with out much success. To that end would you mind if I used your mounting idea it seems real strong and secure.
thanks llewellyn

Update Time!

The amount of welding on this bad boy is insane! I have basically completed the frame fabrication, and at least 90% of the total welding needed for this build! The floor pan isn't welded solid on purpose, my reasoning behind this is to prevent warping. As you can see in the photos from my previous update, the floor pan is definitely braced enough from below to support as much weight as need be. I also had a tunnel built for the drive shaft. It is 1/8 inch thick steel. It needed to be thick to protect whoever is in the cockpit if something were to happen while we were driving. Next, I made a bracket for the shifter. It was pretty simple to make. The gas pedal and brake pedal have also been mounted. As far as the dash goes, I decided to just make my own out of black iron. I was just not happy with the one that we bought with the body. It didn't line up properly, and there were some other issues that we had with it. After ensuring that my dash fit properly, I used 1/2 inch tubing to brace the dash. We got in a 9 gallon aluminum, drum style, gas tank. It hasn't been mounted or hooked up yet. Yesterday, all of the ball joints were changed out. When I built the transmission cover in the cockpit, I added a door to make it possible to access the cable. I have also made some braces for the body , near where the hood half attaches.

Next on the to-do list is the clean up the fame and give it a coat of paint. There are 2 reasons behind painting the frame. The first being to prevent rust, the second is to make it "invisible" though the various holes and openings in the fiberglass body. After we get it painted, we are getting our radiator ordered. We are also going to be installing new front and rear wheel hubs. Let me just say that eBay is the place to go for anything and everything!

As for the next couple of months, we are going to be talking to a couple of mechanics to see about someone hooking up the motor and electrical. I know that the last update said that we were planning on getting the seats, but that hasn't happened yet, but the time frame for that is within the next 2 months or so.
