Good Morning all you crazed nutcases.
(Well lets face tha facts, most of us on here are crazy in our own special way. )

Well straight to the point I guess.
A bit of a long post sorry...
Ive been lurking around the forum for a good few months as most have been or do. Reason for me is probably the same as most other - Drool over all the "art", builds and "gather info", as well as pics...

So as most people Ive Loved the Tumbler ever since the movie was released. Then a year or so later the thoughts started running thru my mind of building one and with a lack of info, specs and pics at the time I thought it was a task that would never see the light of day. So I left it at that and moved on with another project.

Then a few years later I started getting the ideas in my head again and I started searching more and found the forum with all the greatest pics and info. * Thanks to all who have ever posted or shared info thus far...
Long story short I got retrenched and my duaghter was born, so life was all about that.

So finally back on our feet and everything looking better and been going well. Also been doing alot of custom fabrication kits and audio builds out of wood and fiberglass... So we moved into our new place with plenty of space to build and a double garage. Now I wanted to go and get my project car out of starage to start working on it again and thats when my wife thru a curve ball at me. She said why not scrap the other project and use what you have to build the Tumbler, It would cost about the same and its a fresh start. Less reminders for the past few "bad luck" years. Now the problem came in as the project car was my baby for many years and lots of sentimental value. But the more I thought about it the more I realised the facts.
Facts are:
I would have spent a lot of time and money on the project car, where I could spend it on a Tumbler Build.
A fresh start would be good and all the parts and things that are lying in storage I could sell off and put towards a build too. So a win win.

Ive spent the last few months aquiring some tools and equipment that would be needed (If not already aquired) on a build and have pretty much what I could think of at the time to get started.
List includes:
Co2 Welder, Compressor, Drill press, 3-Ton Long Reach car Jack, Engine Crane, Tressels,
Big and small Grinders with Cutting, Grinding and sanding discs. Double Disc sander,
Router, Jig Saw, Circular Saw, Table Saw, Belt Sander, Mitre Saw, Metal Cut off saw,
Various other bits and pieces such as screws, nuts&bolts, welding jigs, water levels, and so forth...

Some of the other basic items that I have also bought that would go towards the build are:
4 Cameras currently, 6 screens, guages, Switches, Some Leds,
Complete front hubs with Discs, Calipers and Spindels, I have a rear diff but not sure if im going to use it yet,
Finger print scanner, A few sheets of wood, Fiberglass and Resin, Carbon Fiber (YES I want to do a few trim pieces in carbon...) Push start button,
I also have a Lexus 1UZ-FE motor and Auto box that was used with a previous project. Was thinking of adding a Supercharger or doing Twin Turbo, but not sure yet...

So I continued the research and have been in contact with Shaggy before about the specs and files. But need to contact him again now.
I will be looking at a 95 - 100 % Scale build as we have restrictions here in South Africa. Im pushing for a 100% scale and road legal...

Now this would be a first in South Africa (To my knowlage and Ive been looking for a few months)
And Im sure it would bet more attension than what my project car would have..
The biggest hold up for me would be getting the rims and tires as I would have to import. Had a look at the costs off ebay to get some idea and not too badly prices, but would have to save a bit for those while I get the rset built first.
Most of the other stuff I could source locally and have already been looking.

Ive also been going thru all the build threads on the forum and I would make a few changes to my build.
I love what the Parker Brothers did to their Gumball Tumbler in the front with more of a view from the cockpit side, and the side opening doors.
Ive been reading Vertigo's "DO YOU WANT TO BUILD A TUMBLER OR ANOTHER BAT..." thread and its awesome thanks man, you covered a few things that I was actually thinking about, so that saves more time and questions...
The Tumbler parts list thread, and various others.

Im just in the process to finish setting up my garage so that I can get around to ordering some steel and a few other small bits.

Sorry for the long post LOL

hey War Machine,
Did you ever think about doing a proxy build in wood? Frame and all.
If you were to complete a 1:1 Tumbler in wood you would be 75% done.
A lot easier to fit and finish wood then translate into metal or fiberglass, etc. vertigo

Hi Vertigo.
Yes I actually have thought of it and saw a few guys doing some test runs with wood sections or pieces...
I was thinking of using 6mm supa wood for all the body panels, and once the entire structure is done and im happy with it then lay them over with 2 layers of 300g fiberglass matting to seal off and finish for spray...

Looks like you've got a great start and a nice advantage with your materials and work space.

As for the wood proxy part, I am coming toward the end of the wood phase of my build and I have a few caveats about this method that I will enumerate in more detail later in my own thread. But just be aware, wood has the disadvantage of being too flexible AND the disadvantage of NOT being flexible. How's that for being cryptic? hehehe

WAR Machine

“I think I have found a suitable front hub section, so excited to go
look on the weekend..”

Hey WAR Machine,

Sounds like progress to me.
I have found that the best way to make the front Tumber axles is to
take a four wheel drive front axle, strip the inner axles out, and cut
the end assemblies from the center hub. Then make and mount the arms,
make and use an alignment jig, and weld the axles into the arms.

Hey all.
Ok so I have a but of a technical query and hoping that some of the more experience builders on here can help me as no one I've spoken too So far has been able to assist with an answer...

So here goes:
I managed to get a accident damaged vehicle that I needed parts off of to repair my wife's car, that was basically only cosmetics that I took off. But now I was sitting thinking if it would be possible to strip the car ( a Honda CRZ) and use as much off there for this project.
So was Thinking along the lines as of: wiring harness, clusters and dials (as they are digital), brake booster, seats (with heaters for those cold days, lol), steering wheel & stalks, steering rack and columb and so forth.
O and the pedals assembly's as well...
But not sure if everything will be strong enough.

I have 90% of the car available to strip and use so was thinking if I use as much as possible from it then it would make life easier instead of trying to mix and match parts...
Storks to control wipers, lights, indicators and so forth.
Wiring harness would be a straight plug and play ( provided I relay and adjust wire lengths where needed)

The only real worry is the steering rack and columb as well as the brake booster???

And advise or ideas on that?

hey War Machine,
Glad to see your Tumbler preparation moving along.

It all depends on how heavy that you plan to build your Tumbler.

For the possible donor you describe most of your answers will be found in
paulwayne's successful and completed Tumbler build using a Toyota MR2..

Hey Vertigo,
Thanks man, I did see his build and was a good idea. Also something different.
I will be stripping my donor car and removing all the parts to use / modify into my build as I want to go for a full 1:1 scale but just trying to confirm again about the size and weights allowed here in our country.
And then making sure I get the donor car wiring layed out / extended instead of doing it all from scratch. I think it would be a bit easier and save a bit of time that way, as all the other clusters and thing would all be plug and play and less headaces of connecting up something wrong... LOL...

Also got myself a few other bits and pieces in regards to tools and equipment yesterday.

Got another 3 sets of G-Clamps and started buying more welding rods, cutting discs, grinding discs and Wire for the CO2 welder.

Ive started setting out a budget now every month to start buying up things I know Im gonna need so that when I start, I will have most of it and have less issues or fustrations that I cant do something as I didnt plan better...

Regards
