Hello everyone,

I am a 15 year old freshman in high school, and I have been dreaming of owning a tumbler ever since I saw the movie. I decided that why buy a car, when I can make on instead. I have quite a list of parts, but im not sure if they are the right ones.

Here is what I would like to know:
Average cost
Average time (hours)
Any pepakura files out there/ templates
True dimensions ( im going to scale it down to 85% full size.)
What tools are recommended
What I should make the body out of (resin, or .063 aluminum sheeting.)

I realize that this is a very big commitment, but I have many friends that can help me.

I have access to a CNC plasma cutter.

hey lasrig,
Welcome to the Tumbler build forums.
Good luck on your future tumbler build.
Everything you need to build a Tumbler is on this forum.
Average cost: 70,000.00 if you do most of the work yourself to 250,000.00 if you hire most work out.
Average time (hours) 2000-5000 hours (3-5 years) You might be able to finish it by high school graduation.
Any pepakura files out there/ templates: Send private message to SHAGGY he may be able to help you.
True dimensions ( im going to scale it down to 85% full size.) Check with SHAGGY
What tools are recommended: Read the threads to get a grasp of what you need.
What I should make the body out of (resin, or .063 aluminum sheeting.) Both have been used to build Tumblers. vertigo

I realize that this is a very big commitment, but I have many friends that can help me.

I have access to a CNC plasma cutter.

Thank you for the help, I will message shaggy ASAP. How much of the cost is metal/ tools, because I can borrow any tool I need, and my relative can get me metal for 1/4 the price.

Tools are not figured into the cost I gave you.
The very bare minimum to build the Tumbler if your did everything yourself and salvaged junk and used parts is 20,000.00. To date no one has built a Tumbler under 70,000.00. vertigo

For some reason, when I try to pm shaggy it doesn't let me. It says something about me not having access. If this is because of me being a newbie then can you message him for me?

That was also happening to me, I couldn't make posts, reply to posts, or even private message anyone. I ended up re-registering a new screen name and it all works fine now.
On the login screen I believe there is an option to send the registration confirmation email to you again, maybe you could give that a shot.

hey lasrig,
Just a heads up on researching for your Tumbler build.
No one will give you copies of their plans, drawings, CAD/CAM files, templates, etc., for free.
Those very few people who have designed and or built a Tumbler successfully have spent years, thousands of hours researching, and thousands of dollars, before completing a set of Tumbler plans, templates, and building a Tumbler.
I personally have a little more than 3000 hours and around 10,000.00 invested in buying plans, information, researching, and designing my Tumbler. Researching is the hardest part of building a Tumbler. Physically building the Tumbler is the easy part and can be completed by an individual in 1000-2000 man hours. You are going to have to do a lot of the hard work on your own if you are going to successfully build a Tumbler. On my Batman v Superman DOJ Batmobile build thread I have explained in detail how to reverse engineer a set of pictorial blueprints from plastic models. If you don't have a few thousand dollars to spend on information you could buy 4-plastic Moebius models of the Tumbler and follow the thread to make a set of usable templates and accurate dimensional drawings. All the rest of the information that will be needed for the mechanics of the Tumbler can be found on this site and throughout the internet. vertigo

For mine I think I invested about $3600 total, however I wouldnt say my version is anywhere near as close to the originals that the others have built/created. Mine is probably a 6/10 and that is being gracious I think. I also haven't purchased the wheels and tires I wanted to put on this. Right now i have 32" inch tires. I want 44" inch mud swampers on the back which may end up doubling my total cost. I just knew I wanted one and I was going to do it. Build period was 6 months with 6 hours a day invested Tues ~ Sat and then 9 hrs on Sun, Mon). So 48 hrs a week for 6 months (24 weeks) = 1152 hours ish for just me. In retrospect, seems like a lot. :S

Tools of choice: grinder (with grinding wheel and cutting disc), mig welder, drill, sander, hammer,

The true dimensions I can't really help you with because my donor vehicle will be different than yours most likely and mine isn't a true replica. sorry I believe I got my file from http://paperinside.com/batman/tumbler/ . But you should be able to find it on the net with a little bit of looking.

Fiberglass will be far less expensive that a full metal alternative in my opinion, but if you have some guy or can find scrap easily metal is a viable option. A cheap mechanics trick for keeping the cost of materials low when fiber-glassing is to use fleece with a good thread count. If you were to create a skeletal structure you can wrap your fleece over the body and tie down with zip ties to keep it from moving. Heavy thread count will resist tearing under tension and hold a true form on the body. Apply resin to both sides and do your multiple layers for rigidity. If you are doing a form, I would use fiberglass matt. It is far easier to work with and you would get better results. The fleece trick is not for form making.

As much as i hate this picture, I'm going to post it anyway. The car behind me is my low budget bat tumbler. The picture was taken at a public school event honoring the 9-16 year olds students who helped me build it.
Fiberglass over steel frame, tri-cut glass based off the gumball tumbler to make visibility easier when driving versus the dual split window. Side windows are armor tank viewport style. I decided not to go with the front visor, or side window (perch, visor) that spans over the top of the side windows. Mine has gull-wing doors, versus the trap door or lotus door so you dont need to climb in. Side doors lift up and pull down like the delorean. Paint job is two layers of rhino liner 60 grit style. It wont chip or peel and will remove paint from someone's door if they decide to ding it.

Even though this is far from perfect, there were several times I wanted to quit by the fourth month which seems kinda sad, but actually but I am viewing it from the stand point of how many hours were already invested in this project. (maybe at the 768 hours ish point) Sleeping about 4 ~ 5 hours a night to get in a decent work sitting in, missed gatherings with friends (while minor gatherings, friends want to go out, instead I stayed in the garage to work), friends while interested in seeing your progress usually will not find the mundane tasks fun and will slowing not come over as often, days you aren't feeling your best (sick, not motivated, distracted, etc.) . I would say anyone who has tried to build something this large has learned the test of personal fortitude, like a marathon.

Hopefully this was helpful.

Hey Tobias,
Welcome to the forum. Completing your build is quite an accomplishment.
Is your Tumbler street legal?
Does your front steering work like the movie Tumbler?
What was the donor vehicle you used? vertigo

It is fully functional and street legal. The steering is similar, but the suspension is different. I used a dual leaf spring support system on the front like off of old international trucks. The I-beam was cut in two and then reversed for interior facing. Thought of the idea off of this picture from pirate4x4.

Batmobile

This design caused the outer edges of the front left and right tire to be a bit bulkier (thicker, wider) which takes away from the original design, but I wanted it to be beefy and not break when underneath it or on the road. In retrospect there are several ways of doing it, but I really have a lot of resources to throw at this project.

Each axles has air-ride assist to take strain off through bumps. The frame will stand by itself just with the leaf springs. I will probably need to rebuild the front since it has a minor issue with super sharp right hand turns, though it might have that issue anyway since it is so long. Have to make my right turn slightly wider or give gas to pivot the rear axle to clear the turn. I used a RWD dodge van with 3.3 liter engine as my donor vehicle. Nothing spectacular, but it moves it no problem. Built a roll cage and bolted it to the uni-body with grade 8 bolts and then welded it afterwards.
