Good info on welding there vert. It's basic stuff people need to know. Anyone that has ever welded a body panel patch has probably experienced distortion for themselves. The thinner the metal the more it is a concern. I basically use MIG and you need to get your temp settings right for the metal thickness.

Hello everyone,

Here is the address for an excellent comprehensive article written on
MIG welder fine tuning, welding techniques, weld speeds, hand
position, bead spacing, and joint applications. All well illustrated
with detailed and relevant photographs.

This is the best instruction that I have seen on learning the MIG for
TIG or more commonly referred to as MIG welding stack of dimes
technique. Mastery of this technique will really allow you to make
welds with your MIG welder that look like they were done with a TIG
welder.

hello everyone,
Almost complete with building my plasma water table. Turned into quite a project. Still have a little welding to do on the staging table that holds steel sheets in ready for feeding onto my plasma table. After that, just need to fill the water tanks and program the system with cutting parameters etc. for my Tumbler body panels. vertigo

Hey Sly,
First thought I had was to build a 4 x 8 table but the 4 x 4 can do everything the 4 x 8 can except cut a 4 x 8 sheet in one pass. If you notice my plasma table has a loading table in front of it. That table allows me to cut 4 x 8 sheets of steel. I have created Torchmate CAD files on 4 x 8 files for my pieces longer than 4 feet and then split them into two side by side 4 x 4 files. Once I finally start cutting on a couple of 4 x 8 steel sheets, I cut the first 4 x 4 file, then slide the sheet forward 4 feet, and cut the second 4 x 4 file. With some extra tables I could cut a 4 x 12 sheet with 3 cut files in three steps. All the other parts can be cut from 4 x 4 steel sheets using 4 x 4 cut files.
When I tried to fire up my CNC plasma table a few days ago the computer was fried. Regular computers don't last long in the plasma table's environment of water tank humidity 70- 90 % and airborne metal dust and grit. For these reasons I ordered a Panasonic ruggedized Toughbook computer. Same model as the one used by the military. Soon as I get the computer and get everything hooked back up I will be ready for another test run. vertigo

Hello everyone,
One note on cutting parts larger than the capacity of a 4 x 4 table.

You can also cut your larger parts in sections and butt weld them
together after cutting to form the larger part. Unless you are a full
time fabricator of large parts your will never benefit from a 4 x 8
plasma table. Rather you will occupy twice the space for a sheet
capacity that would rarely ever be used. vertigo

VERTIGO’s TOOL USING PHILOSOPHY:

I buy tools to complete projects. I don’t buy tools then search for a
project. To me a plasma table is a tool with the potential to save me
time and frustration. CAD/CAM is also a tool. CAD/CAM can take
thousands of hours to truly master but there is a shortcut to get up
and cutting steel. After all we truly just want to cut the parts we
need to build on our Bat vehicles and other projects. Most of us are
not looking to be masters of Computer Aided Drafting and/or looking to
make a living doing computer aided drafting for others. I bought
TORCHMATE CAD, not in particular for the part creation by drawing
aspects but rather to manipulate imported images and drawings into cut
files for plasma cutting steel and other metals. Rarely, do I create
my part cut files by CAD drawings. Rather, I mostly use hand drawn
images and photographs that I scan into Photoshop or directly into
Torchmate. I use TORCHMATE’s Accuscan features to trace and vectorize
the imported image, then create a tool path, and finally save as a DXF
file. To cut, load the DXF file into the machine software and it is
setup in g-code. The TORCHMATE CAD learning curve for imported image
manipulation, Accuscan, cleanup, conversion to DXF file, and actual
cutting system is 100-200 hours. Depends on the individual. As an
example, the Batarang was scanned from a photograph into Photoshop,
where it was cropped, sized to 6-1/2 inches, edge sharpened, and color
adjusted. Then it was imported in TORCHMATE CAD, where the image was
scanned and vectorized with Accuscan. Then a tool path was created and
saved as a DXF file ready for exporting and use. PAINT could be used
in place of Photoshop but is much less flexible and lacks 95% of the
features found in Photoshop. I lease Photoshop for 19.oo a month. This
way it automatically upgrades the latest program changes and follows
me to whatever computer I am using at the time. TORCHMATE CAD is the
best program for the person that wants to make parts with the least
amount of effort. The part drawing section is not the best but the
image importing, manipulation, scanning, vectorization, tool path
generation, and DXF file exporting are quick and easy once learned.
Best part about TORCHMATE CAD is that you don’t need to be able to
actually do computer aided drafting to make high quality parts.

Hello everyone,
Spent a few hours today completing a welding table. Always been a fan of the open grid table. Made this one from a heavy duty metal sign frame I saw at the junk yard. vertigo

Hello everyone,
Using my latest completed welding table as a pre-loading table for my plasma cutting table to support a stacked dozen of mixed 1/8th and 3/16th 4' X 4' metal sheets. vertigo
