Hello everyone,
While waiting on a replacement controller for my CNC plasma cutter decided to experiment with the Batman vs Superman batarang. First, the latest batarang is 6-1/2 inches long. Twice the size of the usual. In the movie they made it out of aluminum to make it easier for the actor to handle while representing it as made of steel. I have decided to use 3/16th thick steel. You too could use aluminum or cast it out of wax, make a mold, and cast them in fiber reinforced resin. I have attached all the necessary photo images so anyone out there can build their own. This is a good starter project for any of you out there who hope and/or plan to build bigger Batman projects in the future. I will build this batarang using only a hacksaw, bench grinder, and files. If you don't have access to a bench grinder you could use one of the hobby hand grinders. Preferably, buy a small bench grinder if you don't already have one. You will find many uses for it throughout your life. In a real pinch you could use just a hacksaw and files. Once I build one or more, I plan to test the real world performance. vertigo

Hello everyone,
If any of you out there are looking for metal to build your Batarang I saw a rack of 3-foot lengths of various steel rods and flats that included the 3/16 inch flat metal at Home Depot today. You can also find this metal at Lowes, Ace Hardware, and many other hardware stores. I have attached a black and white grinding pattern to make it easy to grind out your Batarang metal blank.
For those out there who don't already know how to set up a grinding blank here it is.
Download the attached black and white grounding pattern.
Re-sized the image using your computer's photo program, such as Paint, Photoshop, etc. until you have a 6-1/2 inch life-sized pattern. Cut out your paper pattern leaving the white or cut out just the black part of the pattern. Take your piece of metal wipe it down with acetone. Coat the metal and paper pattern each with rubber contact cement. Let them both dry and stick them together. Or, use any other glue. Or use a vibrating engraver to trace around the pattern. Next, cut away as much material as you can with your hacksaw or a sabre saw with a fine metal cutting blade. Don't try to cut on the actual lines of the pattern. Cut back away from the lines leaving some space to finish it up to the lines with a grinder. Take you time grinding so you don't burn the metal. Keep some water close while grinding so you can dip the metal when it gets hot. For the new Bat Builder this is an excellent project to learn a metal working skill that can potentially be applied to thousands of future project demands. vertigo

Historical and Evolutional Perspective of the Batarang
A batarang is a roughly bat-shaped throwing weapon used by the DC
Comics vigilante Batman. Although they are named after boomerangs,
batarangs have become more like a shuriken or bat-shaped throwing
knife in recent interpretations.
Batarangs first appeared in Detective Comics #31 (Sept. 1939). The
earliest depictions were of scalloped, metal boomerangs used to attack
opponents, which quickly flew back to the thrower. However, variations
of batarangs include those that can fold to fit into Batman's utility
belt, those that can be explosively charged, those that can be
remote-controlled, and those that are electrified. A rifle-like
grappling gun first appeared in Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight
Returns #1. However, the now standard hand-held version of Batman's
grappling gun first appeared in the 1989 Batman film. It gradually
replaced the batarang and a rope in the comics after artist Norm
Breyfogle introduced a grapple gun in Batman #458 in January 1991.
That tool became the standard in the subsequent animated series,
comics, films, and video games such as Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Live-action films:
The batarang used in Batman was a foldable metal bat attached to a
line and was used to ensnare an enemy's legs and manually drag them
back. Batman Returns also featured a computerized version that could
be programmed to fly after specific targets. Batman Forever featured
two types of batarangs: one with a cable which catches thugs in the
Gotham City bank and a Sonar Batarang. Other batarangs are seen in the
Batcave, along with the one used in Batman Returns but not used during
the movie. Batarangs also appeared in Batman and Robin.
The Dark Knight trilogy
The 2005 film Batman Begins showed them as a simple bat-shaped
shuriken, used mainly for distraction rather than as weapons, fitting
in with that film's depiction of Batman's ninja training.
While The Dark Knight uses the batarang in its promotional posters but
is not thrown in the film. As part of Lucius Fox's improvements on the
Batsuit, he adds blades on the suit that shoot out of Batman's arm,
which are similar to the batarang. To gain leverage over his fight
with the Joker, Batman shoots these blades at him, distracting him and
giving Batman the upper hand. His true batarangs are only seen once
during the film; when Bruce Wayne puts away his Batsuit after deciding
to turn himself in to the police, he takes a minute to pick up and
stare at one of his batarangs, and then proceeds to put it away with
the rest of his gear.
In The Dark Knight Rises the traditional Batarangs, as seen in Batman
Begins and The Dark Knight, are not shown, but a similar weapon is
used. Batman fires miniature bat shaped darts at Bane's henchmen which
knock them unconscious. vertigo

Hey I forgot something,
I have attached the DXF cut file for anyone that might want to have some cut for themselves.
Just take the file to anyone with a CNC plasma table and get them cut from steel, stainless steel, or aluminum.
You can find CNC plasma cutting services at most welding, fabrication and sign making shops. Tried to upload the DXF file but this forum doesn't allow the upload of DXF files. You can take the files from this thread on Vertigo's Batarang build to these same shop and they can convert them to DXF files and then cut them for you. Some of the people I know have told me they were charged 3-5.00 each. vertigo
